ok... I started on here about 2.5 years ago and have had tons and tons of help... and hoping for a bit more. I have a 1963 Evinrude Lark V big twin 40hp.... I have taken this thing apart more times than I care to mention now... but now have yet another problem... I have boiled it down to a fuel delivery problem. cleaned out the carb... new float... looks all pretty and shiny inside now... when I pour gas into the plugs.. she fires up and sounds amazing until that fuel is burnt out.... but doesnt want to take the fuel otherwise... the hoses all look good... everything looks clean... (I am novice at outboards still) but it just wont take it... is there something I have missed?? I followed everything in here almost to the letter.... (couldnt get at high speed jet would this prevent it from getting the fuel?) just starting to get frustrated... thought for sure cleaning the carb and the new kit would solve problems L:(

Any and all help appreciated....

Thanks again

disconnect the hose to carb and insure you have no issues getting fuel to carb,if you get fuel to carb, you lkely have a needle seat problem or the float is adjusted badly,no fuel to carb, you probably have an issue at the fuel pump area, remove the fuel line ti the pump and insure fuel to pump is good,if its goot to it but wont come out when you squeeze the ball problem is likely there.if you didnt get a new pump or rebuild it very receintly, you need too,the new gas with ethonol is killer

Could be the tiny idle capillaries that enter the carburetor throat behind the throttle plate are clogged; you may be able to open them by removing the needle and using air pressure or by forcing aerosol carburetor cleaner through. If you use aerosol, protect your eyes.

If you cannot get the high speed jet out of the float bowl, use a piece of soft wire to make sure that it is open, then blow aerosol cleaner through it using the small tube that came with the cleaner.

so... bottom line have to yank out the carb again and try to get in there?? now.. when using the repair kit the little holes at the throat on the top... there are a couple of tiny plates that cover those up... what are they? and is that the capillaries that you are talking about?

Thanks again...

agree with ezeke, and if you are not using alcohol resistant hoses, get them !!

wooz, you may not realize it, but you answered your own question. The high speed jet (orifice plug) almost certainly is the culprit. It has to be absolutely CLEAN. All the fuel that the motor burns goes through that orifice and is precision metered by it.

These guys are far smarter about this than I am, but I just rebuilt my carbs, as well. Didn't have the special tool to get at the orifice, so I ground down the edges of a small screwdriver so I could reach in there with it. Worked like a champ...

That's exactly what 99% of people do. Go buy a cheapy screwdriver and grind it to fit. I have another with the handle chopped off for my Isuzu distributor cap...

so... to set the orifice, should it be in tight? loose? the highspeed jet inside the bowl... should that be tightened as well? thanks again

Re: carb rebuilt... still no fuel to motor...

"than shut down when trying to idle at lower speeds.." did this numerous times... each time I manually put gas into the carb throat through the choke and she fired up again no problems... pulled off the hose from the motor squeezed the bulb... nothin... opened both ends of hose... nothing... than... air came through hose... for about 15 - 20 pumps... than the hose jammed again.. conclusion, new hose... engine runs fine :( 3 years.... never once thought to check the hose from the tank to the motor.... Thanks to all for all your help... now I need to look through the tranny to see whats goin on in there....
