have been doing some work on a friends "modern motor"( 1985 6 hp), and it needs carb work. i admittedly try to shy away from any motor built after 1970. anyway, the recoil starter has to come off ,and when it looks to easy it usually is....i can picture 10ft of spring being unleashed and giving me battle wounds that i dont need! any tips on removing the starter assembly safely so i can get to the carb nut?

thanks

If you remove the two 5/16 bolts in the top bracket, you can carefully tilt the recoil out of the way far enough to get a wrench in behind it to remove the nut on the carb.

X2! If you gently lift the spool out of the base, it should move to the side without undoing the spring. Be sure to put the rope guide rod back in place - I have forgotten that one more than once!

well.....i dont frustrate easily ...but!!! lol this motor does not want to run without being 90% choked? fuel pump screen is clean, pumping fuel very well, tank and bulb has been tried on another motor...works great. compression is good, spark is good, no fuel leaks..everything on the suction side is clamped, no cable ties. did a very good check of the carb body for any cracks...nothing? no blowback through the carb.
what am i missing?

pulled the welch plug, soaked it, cleaned all the passages with a strand of wire, blew it out , sprayed carb cleaner through all the passages again, blew it out once more. ??? runs the same now, as it did before the carb kit...maybe worse! im at a loss on this cranky one. lol
