Hey guys, 1989 50 hp just took carb apart and cleaned it and for got to do one very important thing!! I did not count how many turns that my needle valve took to remove it. Any sugesstions for a good starting spot? The old rule of thumb used to be 1 and 1/2 turns out but I do not know if that applies here. Once I get it running what am I looking for in the fine tunning? Sound, smoothness, not real sure! Thanks again for all your continued help and support. Stuart

Idle mixture screw starting point, 1 turn out, from lightly seated.

If too lean, motor may sneeze, or will die when you accellerate: turn it out another 1/4 turn and try again.

If too rich, plugs will foul.
Just right, or a little on the rich side, and motor will stumble then accellerate when you gun it.

Better rich than lean.

I am having trouble keeping this motor at idle? I have cleaned carb out good needles, seats, jets etc. Is there anything that I can do to the carb to rectify the idle problem?

Do you have a tach?
Idle speed may have to be bumped up a bit.
800 rpm is good.
