I am going to rebuild my carbs. My factory manual says the carbs should not be soaked. However, from most post I have read and from talking to others, it seems that soaking them is highly recomended. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just don't want to damage anything. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Carb soaking

i believe your carbs are " VITON". are they black? if they are, your carbs are made of plastic, as are mine. i have a 1991 225hp. i just rebuilt 3 of them tonight, the carbs that is..

when you rebuild/clean them, just spray with carb cleaner and blow out with compressed ,dry air and all will be good again.

mike

Re: Carb soaking

your carbs are cast aluminum after casting they were coated with something we call glass or sand coat anyway name is not important but some carb cleaners will attack this coating destroying your carb bodies
so i suggest you don't soak them just clean out all jets and passages

Re: Carb soaking

The carbs are not black. I think they are cast aluminum like marinemech said. Thanks for the quick replies. I guess I will just do it without soaking and see how it works. I am curious as to why they would build carbs that could not be soaked?

Re: Carb soaking

I have a little bit of build up in my carb bowls, will just spraying with carb cleaner remove this or should I use a little brush also. I was just going to soak them, but now I'd rather not, knowing what marinemech said.

mmcpeck,

Carb cleaner should probably clean it up, but using a little brush to help it along certainly won't hurt anything. Go for it!

Cheers.
