carb sputter at top end

just built a 4.3 in a 1988 Seaswirl and am unable to go past 25 mph. When I try, the carb sputters and pops. I am running points for now and plan on converting. It has an electric fuel pump (not inline). I don't know what is going on..... compression reads between 160-180 on all cylinders and I just put new plugs in it to try to eliminate the problem but no luck. The motor still sounds rough at idle but fires right up every time. If anyone has any ideas I am all ears. Just want to get the family out on the water this summer.

Thanks to all, Randar55

No, they looked good when I pulled the cap off. Had a mechanic check the points because I am not too familiar with them... he said they were ok. Could the distributor cause the carbon to sputtered like that at top end? This is the first time running into a problem like this so I'm a little lost.

Ayuh,... You need a Real Tune Up, instead of just Lookin' at things...
Breaking up at higher rpms is probably a fuel delivery issue...

Try a coil along with points and condensor.

Thanks for all the ideas... I'm going out to buy a new cap roter, condense, points, and dome fuel treatment for possible water. Hope this works, I understand that just looking at something is not a good diagnosis..... but I did have the points checked and checked the advance and took the plate off to inspect the springs. I really should just convert to electric. Thanks again to all.
