Hello I'm doing some lower unit (water pump) and carb rebuild for a EVINRUDE 1977 55HP (Model: 55773D Serial:E0005284) and had some questions and wanted to describe abit what was going on. Please bare with me.

Symtoms) It would pee fine then goto no water / no water and steam. Then if I rev'd it in neutral or got on the throttle abit with it in gear it would go back to better pee but still always off and on.

The arm that holds the Idle screw would not rest back into full idle or against the stop , had to push back by hand.

Wouldn't hold an idle after someone messed with idle screw and the full stop underneath the flywheel

Shifts into reverse choppy at the remote control. Fwd is smooth.

Questions)

1)I know I have a type IV carb and I'm going to replace some stuff but do I have to do the welch plugs too?

2)Is this engine a short or long shaft? It had a rubber sleave seal on the shift shaft zip tied, which seloc said it is a long shaft then.

3)Both seals (top and bottom) were messed up for the exhaust piece in L/U. Are they both available, cause I only see bottom 1 in 'evinrude parts'. If so what is the part # for the top one.

4)Should I keep the plastic screen in? Heard some people say leave it out, plus on one side it starting to break up.

5)Gonna need the Torque values for all the bolts inside and out of the L/U please.

6)Do I replace all the gaskets in the fuel pump? Cause I can't find just gaskets from 'evinrude parts' just the whole ASSBY.

7)I'm gonna replace all the rubber (soft ) stuff on the water pump, but do I need to replace any of the metal or housing base on experience or on the PICS when I post them?

8)Is there a T-stat on this motor?

9)Sorry for all the Q's , but this is my Dad's rig so im tryin to square him away.

If I can think of anything else I post more.

Thanks,
Damian

i strongly suggest you get the original service manual for that motor. outboardbooks.com.

under the welch plugs are the venturi for the slow speed mix, if clogged it will not get fuel, your choice to remove them. i would.

with out model # can't tell what shaft it is.

plastic screen keeps crap out of the cooling system.

i always replace fuel pumps, too many things to go wrong.

housing depends on the present ones condition.

it does have a tstat.

Hey Tashasdaddy

Thanks for the help.

(Model: 55773D Serial:E0005284)

Plus do you know where I can get the top seal for the exhaust piece in L/U? I see the bottom one in evinrude parts under 'gearcase' section, but no top one?

I have a seloc manual , but it is very generalised. Your right I should have got the one that focused on my motor more.

Can't I hook the fuel pump up to a tank and pump ball till hard. Then see if fuel is leaking from the vaccum hole to check if the pump is still good?

Do you have any idea why the motor would pee fine then goto no water and steam coming from Tell tale. Could this be the exhaust leaking into it some were(from the 2 seals that were in bad shape), negating the water pressure and sending out just steam? Impeller was 100%

Thanks,
Damian

Also what is the best way to get the welch plugs out and then back in? I did a set on a Tecumseh carb from a snowblower but they looked easier than these. I just don't want to butcher the damn thing trying to fix it.

Thanks,
Damian
