i have a 2000 johnson model j70vlsis ser. g04943569. between fishing trips, about one week. all 3 carbs fill with oil. i have to remove air selincer and the drain plugs to drain oil from carbs in order to start. they are full of oil. then engine runs fine except sometimes stalls when docking. thanks.

Your oil tank is not venting properly.....You need to take a large paperclip, unfold the end and push it thru the rubber seal thru the cap to relieve the pressure.

tbi1500,
If you are using the VRO system (not premixing your fuel...look for air getting into a fuel supply line. This let's the pump suck air into the system, and in turn will use excessive oil from your oil resevoir.
Last case I saw, motor was using more than 3 times the oil it should have been. Not sure what year it was,but it was a recent 70HP.Found the plastic fuel filter had a hole in it.Another cause would be a loose fuel fitting.
What amazes me is that the motor runs well using that much oil.Of course today's ignitions will throw 7/16 inch of spark.
Good Luck
DHPMARINE

Re: carbs fill with oil

tbi, I had a similar problem with my 1994 evinrude 225. Found out it had a faulty vro that would let oil drain back down the gas line (filling inline filter and fuel hose with oil)while boat was in storage. Then when I would pump the bulb to start engine I would fill the carbs with oil. I got rid of the vro and have not had a problem since. My local mechanic said he has seen it many times but usually on the older engines.

Walleyehed's idea of venting the oil tank cap helps in some cases. If you have the oil tank higher than the motor, such as in a pontoon boat application, you could have problems with siphoning. Also, a leaking oil outlet check valve inside the "VRO" can allow oil to seep into the fuel chamber, especially if pressure builds up in the tank.

New "VRO"s from Bombardier (part no. 500****) or the rebuilt ones from DFI Technologies (www.dfitechnolgies.com)have improved outlet valves in them.

Re: carbs fill with oil

The last time you ran your motor, you removed the fuel line so as to "run the motor out of fuel" didn't you???? Don't lie!! You did didn't you??? Well, ya can't do that! Here's why!!
As you run the fuel out of the carbs, the engine runs "lean" which means it runs "faster" just as it starts to use up the balance of fuel in the carbs. Ever notice?? Since the the engines runs faster, the piston that pulses the pulse line from the powerhead to the VRO starts pumping/pulsating faster( the VRO thinks the motor is using more fuel, it IS pulsating faster,so it provides more oil to lube the engine when in fact there is not anymore fuel in the carbs. The carbs get full of oil and a bear to restart!! This is especially true on a 3 cylinder engine more than other VRO motors, but the same holds true for any VRO motor! Additionally, if you have the motor cover off when you run it out of fuel, you will start hearing a rapping/knocking/tapping noise. This is the fuel portion of the VRO "slamming itself" against it's internal seat due to the fact that the liquid fuel normally cushions the internal componants. The fuel pieces will fail if you do this too often!! So, don't !!

oil tank vent is open. air not getting in fuel supply line . uses normal amount of oil once i get it started. carbs are full of straight oil. fuel filter o.k. it,s on a pontoon boat. yes the oil tank is higer than the engine. bottom of tank even with top carb. never run engine out of fuel that would make engine run lean no good for any engine. maybe best bet is to bypass vro and mix gas. funny ran perfect for 1.5 years.

The "VRO" checkvalve bulletin was how to remove the oil pump section and test for leakage thru the check valve. If it was bad, you needed a new pump.

The new pumps have improved components where I've never seen it happen to them. The rebuilt dfitecnologies.com pumps also have a redesigned check valve in them.
