Carbs/Float???

Based upon all of the threads I have read I'm guessing I have something wrong with my float or my carb is dirty somewhere but I am hoping some of you will chime in with your thoughts.

1968/69 Johnson Super Seahorse 33 HP

I get to the dock today and she starts right up no problem. I motor away and open it up to 3/4 throttle or so and head across the bay. I decided to adjust the high speed and low speed knobs a bit to see if I could tweak things and get the speed up a bit. Eventually I set the knobs back to where they were which is both pointing straight up to 12 o'clock.

No problems so far. I get to a cove and turn the motor off for a moment and then back on. Full speed back to the dock because I forgot my sunglasses. When I get close I throttle down and go into neutral for a moment to get some lines rdy and the motor starts dying on me. Feels like it's not getting fuel. When I look at the motor I see that fuels comes out of the carb if I pump the bulb.

Turn the key and nothing. I wait a few minutes and then am able to start it back up but she's hardly moving. I have to press the throttle almost all the way down to keep it from stalling out. I'm barley able to make it back to my dock.

I can get it started again at the dock but as I throttle in neutral it doesn't seem like it's revving up when I go full throttle. Fuel drips from the carb when I do this.

So I'm guessing something is wrong with the float?

Could this have anything to do with throttle linkage?

I'm not very mechanical and the boat is the water so am hesitant to work on it while docked. I'm sure I'll drop something in the water.

Any ideas?

I know I can get a carb rebuild kit but want to be sure I have identified the issue first.

Thanks!!

Alex sounds like your heading in the right direction. Sounds like a float/s and or needle and seat/s out of adjustment or a piece of trash is hung up in the fuel carb system.

If it's the needle how do I go about trouble shooting/repairing?

Could I have caused this by playing with the high speed/low speed knobs?

Thanks for the feedback!!

Re: Carbs/Float???

You will have to take the carb apart to check out the needle/seat and float.
I don't think moving the high/low speed needles would have caused your problem.

I have read that some carb rebuild kits don't come with a new float? Is this true?

Have you got a model number off of your engine?

I think the one you need is a 0382050, but let me do some checking.

You're welcome. come on back if you have any more questions. Make sure you get your model number, I woun't be the last one to ask for it if you need further assistance. Look on the carry handle or transom clamp for a plate with the model/serial number on it.

I'm going to head down to the boat after work today to get the model number.

If nothing is done about this float problem will the fuel level go back down on it's own until I start the motor again?

Are you 100% that it is in fact the float and not something else?

Re: Carbs/Float???

It occurred to me that I posted a similar problem a couple years ago. I was playing with the high speed/low speed knobs back then just before I had the issue just as I did yesterday before the problem started.

Coincidence or am I causing this issue when I adjust the knobs? In both cases after playing with the knobs I set them back to "normal" 12 o'clock. An image of the knobs can be seen in the old post.

Re: Carbs/Float???

The float controls the needle/seat which allows fuel into the carb. When the carb bowl is full of fuel, the float comes up and closes the needle/seat to stop fuel from coming in. If you squeeze the primer bulb and fuel comes out of the carb, either something is in the needle/seat, keeping it open or the float is sunk in the carb and not working the valve properly. If you are going to overhaul the carb and it has the old style cork float, while you have it apart you should install the new style foam float. Adjusting the needle valve should have no affect on fuel coming out of the carb when squeezing the primer bulb.

Re: Carbs/Float???

Called the marinas around town and the only guy who is willing to work on it told me that it's possible my adjusting of the knobs is causing the fuel to come out the carb. You are saying it's not possible and to be honest I am trusting you way more than "Al" down at the marina.

I'm super nervous about attempting this repair myself.

I am going to test the boat again tonight after work to see if the same thing happens and grab that model number off the engine to be sure the carb kit you linked to is accurate.

Re: Carbs/Float???

In my experience, the adjustment needles will not cause fuel to flow out of the carbs. I am sure someone will come along and confirn of deny my opinon, there are a lot of experts here, they will help out.
Test it again, maybe there was a piece of trash that flushed out and it will operate properly.
