Carbs leaking, engine stalls at idle, tach issues

Looking for some help diagnosing a couple of issues. I have twin 96 Johnson 150s.

1. The carbs on both engines seem to be leaking quite a bit. When the boat is left on the trailer for a few days, I will come back to find that fuel/oil has leaked out of the cowling (under the taletale nozzle) and run down the back of the engine to the foot.

2. The engines will stall at idle from time to time. Other than that, they run great over all rpm ranges. The port engine seems to do this more often and it doesn't seem to matter if the engines are hot or cold. They only do it once they come out of "fast idle" after cranking.

3. I had a bad tach on the Stbd engine, so i replaced it. I wasn't sure I believed the tach on the port engine to begin with, just because the engine didn't sound like it was turning the rpms that the tach displayed. Well, as it turns out, the port tach is reading about 1000rpms higher at WOT than the Std (new) tach. Both tachs are set at "5" on the rear, which is what the manual says for these engines. Any way to check this to determine which tach is correct? Any other suggestions for what to check would be greatly appreciated.

I know its a lot for one post, but I need some assistance diagnosing these issues. And the leaking carbs and idle stalls are probably related.

Thanks,
Fin

BTW, the fuel tanks are separate for each engine and I have replaced plugs, and fuel filters/water seps already. I run the boat quite a bit and use a fuel stabilizer so stale fuel shouldnt be an issue.

I'd guess your problem is a stuck or mis-adjusted float or a float needle that's not seating properly allowing the float bowls to overfill and leak. This will also flood your engine at idle. If it's only slightly mis-adjusted or a bad float needle you'll only see a trickle of an overflow problem which won't be so noticeable in higher rpm ranges. Just a guess though. A complete carb rebuild will fix the overflow problem regardless.

I believe that you want your tachometer settings to be at 6P rather than 5.

is it one of these that you are having the tilt problem with? have you compare the 2 engines. check the tilt thread.

Its darn hard to track down carb leaks on that motor. Too many carbs and not much room between them to look for the leaky ones. The gaskets between the float bowls and the carb bodies get old and leak along the flats between the screws. This is usually caused by someone along the way cranking the screws down too tight.

Y'know I should have asked . . .

Is it leaking with the motors tilted up, or are they all the way down?

The motors are all the way down when on the trailer when it leaks.

Finatic, Have you checked to see if the fuel tank's vents are open? If not pressure in the tank can force fuel into the motors.

I'm pretty sure the tank vents are clear since I dont have any trouble or spitting when filling the tanks. They are the fill/vent combo fittings, if that makes sense. Also, I would think that the fuel primer bulbs would stay hard if tank pressure was the culprit. The bulbs bleed down after the boat sits a while.

Thanks for the ideas so far...keep 'em coming.

Anyone know 'bout what a rebuild kit costs for these engines.

Finatic, I saw carb rebuild kits (avail a lot of places on the web) for $13-16ea. So six carbs times $16 is ....

Also that motor has a vapor separator with a inlet needle and a float, like a carb does. You might like to check that out.
