I have a 1988 Mercury 60 hp that that I purchased 2 yrs ago. Twin carbs, 3 cyl. Would not start. Merc repair guy says carbs need rebuild. After I rebuild from rebuild kit, is it absolutely necessary to re-time the motor. I'm new to outboard motor repairs. Can easily rebuild carbs but timing instructions are very complicated. Also, motor hasn't run in three yrs. Appreciate any help.

Re: carbs rebuild

Since its been sitting you should also rebuild the fuel pump, replace the impeller and change L/U oil. When you put the carbs back on be sure they are in sync. You can always retime it later if needed.

Re: carbs rebuild

Technically, when carbs are removed the linkages are disturbed and need to be adjusted so all three carbs begin to open, open fully and are fully closed --at precisely the same time. This process is called link&sync and it does include engine timiing (idle and wide open throttle). Generally -- and I repeat generally, timing settings don't change enough to worry about, but the other adjustments can be affected. The link&sync process is rather long and must be followed to the letter so if you don't have a service manual, you are advised to get one. At least check your library for the generic versions (Clymer and Seloc.) They may not have one for your exact engine but close is better than none at all.

Re: carbs rebuild

Thank you guys for the info....also, if any one knows what the compression should be on this motor. I did get the Seloc manual but can't find that info any where. All it says is that there should not be any more than 15% difference between the 3 cyl.. Also,(sorry to be a pest with all these questions) there are two ground wires coming from under the flywheel with some of its insulation coming off. Will wire shrink rap fix this or am I also in trouble with this also. By the way, I did get this motor running 3 times for about 5-7 seconds each time so It seems like it will run if I correct the problems (hopefully).

Re: carbs rebuild

Carl, Compression should be 100 PSI or more and even on all cylinders. Shrinkwrap all the wires with isulation problems.
