will a 1987 carb from a E40ELCUD fit a 1995 E40TLEOD

Hi Bob - welcome to iboats! The BRP parts catalog at http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e says the Johnson carb bodies are different as you'd expect, but there's several common parts, including the carb mounting gasket (p/n 0325092). I'm assuming it's the same for Evinrude. The 1995 has an intermediate jet so it probably performs better. The butterfly valve lever and pin assy is also different, but looks the same. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll work. But hopefully we'll hear from someone who knows.

Thanks for your reply.
The ebay seller says the E40ELCUD carbs came off a 1987 evinrude 40 hp.
I broke the high speed nozzel of of my 95 evinrude E40TLEOD model carb and its not fixable . could i change out my linkage and put the E40ELCUD carbs on my motor. the carb # on them are 397610 the carb # on my carbs are 338069.

I think you'll see that they changed the throttle cam during those years from a plastic one to one that's built into the armature plate. Don't know if they're different cam angles or anything, but that's something else to consider.

You need somebody who's tried it to tell you whether or not it works - odds of finding that aren't good, IMHO.

Don't think you can tell from looking at the diagrams:

The 1987 has different part #'s for upper and lower.

Do the 1987 carb throats move the same volume of air as the 1995? if not it won't work.

The 1987 has a fixed idle orfice. I guess its possible the stock orfice might be the correct mixture for your motor - if not it won't work.

Is your hi-speed mixture the same as the 1987? If not it won't work. If so, will your motor accelerate without the off-idle circuit?

Are the throttle cams are exactly the same shape, and mounted in exactly the same place relative to the carb cam follower? if not it won't work.

be an interesting experiment, but it could really eat into your fishing time....if you could find a salvage yard close by.......or maybe, call this guy in Oklahoma: http://www.cheapoldboats.com/old_motor_parts.html

Thanks everyone for your help, checked everywhere for a used carb but nothing so far. where can i order a new carb or is that out also.
