Carburator "tubing"

1969 Merc 1000 has a black tube coming out the side. What is it and where should it plug into if anywhere.

I believe that is a vent tube. Not sure what it does, but I have two Merc 800's of the same vintage (1970 and 1971) and they both have the vents.

The tube runs from the dist cap to a port on the front of the bottom cowling, directly in front of the carbs.

My 1971 motor does not have the tubing, but instead has a small screened vent plug installed in the dist cap.

maybe someone else can offer an explanation on what they are for.

no one else has replyed. I am trying to get this thing running. I just needed to know if it was affecting the performance.

Suggest you repost with a new title. Someone here knows what they are for, but your title for this thread is misleading.

I'm curious now what they are for as well.

Both styles of 'vents' were used, depending on model year.

Merc was preventing arc over between plug wire terminals inside the distributor cap caused by condensation, venting kept condensation to a minimum.
