Hi! Can anyone help. I have a Volvo Penta 231B 1988.(V8) I wonder about the carburetor. On the starboard side there is something which could be an electrical choke? It is circular about 2 inch in diameter and has a lilac cable which I havent managed to trace.
Does anyone know what it is?

Best regards, Harry

Check no: 12 and 13 on this (picture) link (Volvo Penta 231A, Carburetor)
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=2169&GroupList=2166,2165,2167,2169,2171,2172,2173,2174,2175,2176,2177,2178,2180,2182,2183,2184,218 5,2186,2187,2188,2189,2190,2198,2192,2193,2195,2194,2196,2197,2200,2201,2202,2204,2203,2205,2206,2207,2208,2209,2210,2211,2212,2213,2215,2214

//Harry

Yep that is an electric choke, the lilac cable is a wire.
Normally after starting the engine, power is supplied to the choke, it heats up inside and opens. On your model I am not sure what is inline with that wire, ie. relay or switch

You need a schematic to trace it.

Jeff

Ya like he said, the wire connects to a heating element inside the ochoke operator. As the bimetal is heated it expands and opens the choke. You should get 12V. at the wire when the engine is running. I believe it is powered from the alternator directly. It should be adjustable by losening three small clamps and rotating for a leaner or richer mixture.

Scott

It is not powered directly from the alternator, the power comes from an ignition switch controlled +12 so the choke only heats when the ignition is on. Lilac is usually the color cose for wires connected to the ignition switch +12, at least that is the case with the OMC system I have.
