Carburetor rebuild 1974 50hp float question

I am rebuilding my carburetors on a 74 50hp. I have a Clymer manual and it says I need to use a float gauge to get the float level correct. My question is, how critical is this and if so where can I get one of these gauges or is there an alternate means?

I believe if you install the float and invert the carb, if the float is parallel and even with the carb body you are in good shape.

Joe Reeves put a thread on here about setting the float level without a gauge. I would imagine a search would turn it up.

Good luck
Steve
