Can i just take the carb off the block open it up and clean it with carb cleaner, with out having to take piece by piece out? it had been sitting for about 3 years or so, i finally got it to fire up but cant keep it running.

There is no need to remove it to clean it. You need iit to be running to use carb cleaner. Get a spray can from any auto parts store, read direction its real simple. You may also need to adjust the idler needles and trottle screw. What kind of carb and what engine. If you remove it you may as well take it apart.

Sounds like your carb is dirty to me and does require cleaning by removing the bowl and blowing carb cleaner through your jets and make sure you float isn't sticking. You don't have to remove the jets or float but the bowl does need to be removed from the carb to clean it.

There's very few pieces to take apart. It's highly recommended to take it apart and clean it as spraying carb cleaner in it will just burn it and it's bad for the engine.

If you want it clean you need to take it apart and clean it, it is the ONLY way to be sure it is done right.

Jets should have a stranded copper wire run through them even if they "look" clean also run wire through carb passages and use compressed air to clean them, the air in a can works well.

As stated, carb cleaner doesn't have any oil in it and is very hard on the engine of coarse bench cleaning use all you want.

There is no genie in a bottle that will clean carbs, do it right once, use a fuel filter and drain the float bowl in the off season and you shouldn't have to do it again for a long time.
