As per the factory service manual (F.S.M.), I knew that the hoses were NOT going to be right, so last Sunday (8-01) I pulled the carbs off and routed the hoses as the F.S.M. shows in the diagram. I finally made it to the weekend (8-07), hooked up to the boat and took off for Kentucky Lake. Only about 74 miles from the house; about half way to the fishing spot I started thinking that ?man, I wonder if this thing will run. Surprisingly enough, pumped the bulb up and lit the candle, and made the most delightful noise that I have ever heard. The motor set there and idled for 20 minutes, we headed out of the bay, jumped on the throttle and the motor purred as if brand new. We ran up river about three miles shut it down for the morning bite. By the way I caught a nice 3lb 18 ? inch Big mouth, (and have the picture to prove it:D) looked at my dad and said ?Man this thing is running great, about 2.5 seconds later, sneezed and died. So I am scratching my head and wondering what now. I premix the fuel, and it rotates out about every other weekend, along with marine stabile mixed in, I have cleaned the carbs and pulled the jet in the bottom of the bowl as well. I have checked the spark with the 7/16 air gap, the time at WOT is 16 BTDC and the idle is set at 6 ATDC idle about 650 in gear.

With the above information about the motor listed below, does anyone have a thought as to where I need to go???

Thanks

Sneezed & died & then it ????????????????? Stayed dead or started back up & ran funny or started up & ran great & never missed a beat again. Did you check your new hoses to make sure one didn't blow off & cause the sneeze ? You checked the spark & WHAT was the outcome of that ?

MORE INFO NEEDED.

You are right not enough information... I got into a hurry, my fault.
After doing a little research, you (234rick) seem to be a real big SMARTA## when responding to other people seeking answers; why is that? Out of the 69 posts that you have you started 6 threads; your tone of being a Smart#ss only appears when your are reading a post that you have no idea of what you are reading. So you feel that you have to add something so you respond to them with a sma#tas# comment; Do me a favor, skip over my threads in the future.

Re: Carburetors? hose were way off?

Now that some time has passed:

1988 Johnson GT 200, VRO is disconnected.

What I am trying figure out is the lean condition that is causing the sneeze and dying. The link & sync has been done by the book (F.S.M.) which in itself made everything great. The motor will start right back up every time, so I feel that I am dealing with a fuel problem. I would think that the pump is weak, except for the motor does NOT stumble when I jump down on the hot foot.

As stated earlier, started the motor and it idled for 20 minutes without even a hint of a sneeze was on its way, motored out of the bay and jumped on the throttle and bam, out on plane and moved as if the thing was brand new. Idled around the mouth of the bay looking for ledges and drop offs, shut it down and went to fishing for about an hour, fired it back up and idled across the bay, not until I mentioned that this thing is running great did it sneeze and die. The sneeze and die condition came and went the rest of the day; this problem is more annoying than troublesome. So here is the plan for this weekend to make sure that I haven?t lost my mind. I have the plan of trying and letting it idle for longer periods of time to try and narrow down the temperature of the motor as to when the sneezing and dying starts. As stated earlier, I premix the fuel, and it rotates out about every other weekend, along with marine stabile mixed in, I have cleaned the carbs and pulled the jet in the bottom of the bowl as well. I have checked the spark with the 7/16 air gap, the time at WOT is 16 BTDC and the idle is set at 6 ATDC idle about 650 in gear.
