carpet bunks fell apart

I have a 15 year old trailer. The carpet bunk fell apart on one side. The bolts rusted and the wood came loose. It was redwood 8 foot long and carpeted.

My question is should I use redwood to replace the bunks or get some kind of treated wood instead or even get a fir 2X4 and put some treatment on it? There must be different grades of marine carpet one could buy, right? But are the heavier grades of carpet difficult to bend around a 2X4 for a snug fit. The old bunks were stapled with a million staples. Can I use screws to attach the carpet? Do I need to glue the carpet on?

I also considered premade replacement bunks but cannot find a good source. I need two of them that are 8 feet long.

Thanks,

McPhee,

I just replaced my bunks, had 2x4, replaced with 2x6 pressure treated, purchased bunk carpet from West Marine. I am sure they sell it here on iboats. I paid about $18 each side for the carpet.

You do not need to glue the carpet on, the bunk carpet is cut and design to fit around both 2x4 and 2x6 wood. I used 1" galvanized roofing nails about every six inches to secure to the underside of the wood. I started from the center and worked my way to each end using the "lines" in the carpet to keep things straight and tought.

Head off to home depot get you wood, order the bunk carpet or go to your local boating store. Gind off the old bolts and get some new galvanized or stainless. You should be set then. Countersink the bolts in the wood and connect everything to the trailer before you put the carpet on. Then add carpet. That's it.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

home depot sell a 24" wide runner carpet (heavy duty) for 1.98 a ft. split in 12 inch strips, i started at one end and nailed to the bottom streched it nialed to the other end bottom, the cut and work the sides nailing to the bottom. the drilled holes and mounted. use 2x6 u you may have to raise the keel rollers, but it get it higher off the road.

I have seen ads for stuff called "bunk skids". Suppose to make your boat just glide right off the trailer into the water. I will probably upgrade next year.
