Re: Carpet Glue

Hey isaac, how is that carpet for bending over the edges of hatches and what not? Is it too stiff at all?

Re: Carpet Glue

The carpet is a little more on the stiff side than I would ideally like it too be. But with some work it will go over. The bass boat i just carpeted was the first one i did where i had to fold it over the live well. It turned out nice, took a little work to get it tight but i am happy with the results. Lowes often has a clearance bin of returns for really cheap so if you are not worried about color you can find really good deals. I bought 20ft of grey carpet once for $12. Someday I might spring for a nicer carpet, but for now this will have too do.

Re: Carpet Glue

Actually guys it's not the same carpet that is sold at Lowes. I looked extensively at Lowes and what Lowes has is very limited in color choices and does not have the same thickness or backing. At least it's not the same at my local Lowes....may be elsewhere. I was not impressed with the Lowes carpet and it was almost the same price for a 6' X 20' roll.

The boat is going to remain garaged when not in use and again, its a $1500 boat, so I think it will work fine for what I am after.

With that said, I do appreciate everyone's responses, experiences and advice. I will follow up and let you know how it works out for me.

Re: Carpet Glue

Just went to Lowes tonight to see what they had. You're right, that isn't there's. It DOES look like what I saw at Home Depot though.

I decided I didn't like the lines in it and ended up ordering marine carpet. Interestingly enough, when I did a search for marine carpet Home Depot came up and I ended up ordering this: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...D23X-_-100661374&locStoreNum=4125&marketID=68 which I thought was a great deal for 20' of it which even more than I need. I ordered this adhesive to go with it http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100117949 we'll see how it goes.

Re: Carpet Glue

One other question folks....does anyone recommend Thompsons water seal or marine varnish or something on the plywood to seal the wood before glueing and carpeting?

Thanks again.

Re: Carpet Glue

Thompson's is a complete waste of time. The stuff is basically just colored wax. Heck now that I think about it, it would probably ruin your adhesion. Best way to seal wood from best to good (in my opinion):

Epoxy or polyester resin and fiberglass
Epoxy resin by itself
Marine spar varnish
Quality porch and floor paint

Re: Carpet Glue

Thanks for replies....one more question regarding my new plywood decking. I have bought and intended to use 1 1/2" self tapping sheet metal screws to tack the plywood decking down. Now I am starting to wonder if I should use rivets (which is what was used on the old decking) or use the sheet metal screws. Started thinking that maybe the sheet metal screws "may" work there way loose over time. Thoughts??

Thanks again.

Re: Carpet Glue

What kinda boat we talking about here? Aluminum or fiberglass? I'm assuming aluminum with aluminum stringers if it had rivets in it.

We tin boat guys had a discussion about this a little bit ago. It was determined that rivets would hold better. A couple of members used the rivets successfully though one had issues getting them to work on the sides where the floor was fastened to the ribs and ended up using screws. I personally used deck screws on my project and I used them on my last project as well and after 5 years they were still all in there.

Re: Carpet Glue

Henry 633 adhesive worked great and is easy to work with. Carpet appears to be of good quality and cuts easy and installed easy. Pictures to follow.

Thanks for the advice all.

Re: Carpet Glue

I used the carpet glue in Overton's catalog, but, I glued to new fiberglass. The gallon did not provide the coverage noted on the label, so, I had to finish with outdoor carpet glue from the hardware store. So far, so good, after one year, however, I would agree with other posters that snaps are better, if feasible. I also agree that paint on the plywood is preferable before gluing carpet to it.
