Re: carpet opinons

To say a person is dumb for having carpet in their boat is definately an "opinion"......we have had carpet in our 1977 Royal American since day one when we got it brand new, the boat is as solid today as it was then, no rot, but it also helps if you actually take care of the boat.......which includes the carpet.

Of course its an opinion. There is not a single post here that is NOT an opinion.

Everything requires maintenance and care if you want it to last long and look good. In fact (IMHO....LOL), although vinyl requires less maintanance, it requires greater care.

For snap in carpets, the edges are finished with a sewn-on binding. Go to wallmart and look at a carpet runner. Same thing. They look nice but after a lot of use the threads tend to pull and the binding falls off. Factory OEM Marine grade carpets are much higher quality than the junk at WalMart, but you get the idea.

Factory Snap in carpets usually go over a fiberglass innerliner. In other words, the deck is finished and gelcoated. The seams between the carpet panels show thru, so if you are retrofitting you need to finish the deck real nice first or it'll look like crap. Laying vinyl carpet is monolithic, so the deck's "appearance" is not as critical - just needs to be sealed. If you have an aluminum boat, just cover the plywood deck before you install it and it'll look like a factory job.

I dont have a closeup of the floor, but the pics below show my seats covered with Nautolex flooring. Its laminated to 1/2" plywood and wrapped around the edges, then screwed down with SS screws and finishing washers. It matches the floor.

What requires great care is walking on the vinyl, or cleaning the carpet after a drunken fishing buddy spills oil on it......yes I know this from bad experiences....lol.

The (true) marine carpet will also have a rubber backing on it. This serves a few purposes. It makes the carpet even more comfortable to walk on, it keeps it from sliding under foot on a gelcoat/painted sole, and it doesn't allow water to seep thru and lay between the carpet & the sole, allowing mildew & rot to run rampant. To clean it, simply spray a little (your brand of choice) carpet cleaner on it and hit it easily with a pressure washer. I've had mine for 3 years and it still looks beautiful.

Re: carpet opinons

I'm thinking about this for my boat: http://hydroturf.com/pwc_matcolors.php It's either going to be the hydroturf or the Skid-No-More from iboats. Still havn't decided; but I do want to remove the carpet from my boat. I'll give it a couple coats of epoxy before I apply the final finish, whichever I go with.

Since seeing this I have been really thinking about this Hydro Turf, looks like good stuff for the money. I'd like the 1/8" thick stuff, but it only comes in white or black for a large sheet it seems:( Please PM Me or let me know if you do this.
