carpeting bunks

I replaced a bunk on my trailer the other day. It's great except for the carpet. I wrapped it around the bunk and stapled it on the bottom, pulling it as tight as possible. However, when I loaded the boat (pontoon) back on the trailer it put a 2'-3' gash in the new carpet. I'm wondering if it's because I didn't get the carpet tight enough on the bunk. Could that be the problem? If so, what can I do to get it tighter. Should I glue it or something?

Never done the job, but I would glue the carpet on all around, and then throw some staples on all surfaces except the top.

When I redid mine I used carpet glue on the tops of the bunk boards and stapled the heck out of the boards on the bottom. So far so good been 6 months and a few launches still good.....

When I did mine, I wrapped the carpet as tight as possible along with double sided fiberglass tape on the bunk then used galvanized roofing nails. Never have had trouble with them. Used the same double sided fiberglass tape to put the carpet on the floor and sides of my Monarch.
I've seen to many staples rust out, the roofing nails won't

i just did mine a week ago !....i didn't know about the glue ? but i did use some good roofing nails along with staples

hope i don't have any problems

i used adhesive to hold the carpet to the boards. thats how mine was from the factory when i took it apart. It also helps hold the carpet in place while you staple it.

What kind of carpet did you use? Or what type would you recommend? Did you reuse the old carpet? Is that possible?

You can reuse the existing carpet if it's in good enough shape and you can remove it from the old bunk in one piece. In my case the geniuses at the marina where I bought the boat recarpeted a couple of the bunks and botched it so badly I'm having to redo them. Rather than removing the bunks and wrapping the carpet all the way around them they just carpeted around the bunk brackets and didn't completely cover the bunks.They left me a mess. It's just as well because the bunks really need to be replaced any way. The sad thing is it's quality carpet and in good condition but they cut on it so much it doesn't cover the bunks sufficiently. I bought the new bunk carpet at a local marine shop. Any marine shop in your area should have it. Just tell them you need some bunk carpet and they'll probably sell it to you by the foot. You can probably also order it here on iboats.
