Carrier assembly o-ring replacement

I recently pressure tested my lower unit and found that the o-ring behind the carrier assembly was leaking. I dropped it off at my local shop and the owner said that to replace the o-ring, he'd have to pull the shifter then pull out the prop shaft, emphasizing that he had to get it extremely clean in order for it to seal. He said it would be less than $300 to replace the two seals,o-ring, and retainer nut. That sounded good to me. I figure it's probably a one-hour job for an experienced mech.

Well,he's had it over a week, and I stopped by yesterday to see if I'd get it this week. He hemmed and hawed and said hopefully, maybe.

I can buy the retainer nut wrench for $50, seals for $20, O-ring for $8. Do all you guys remove the prop shaft to clean the o-ring seat? Seems like I could attach the head of a wire brush to a long handle and give it a good cleaning with solvent, then blow it out with compressed air.

How 'bout it? This is a contingency plan just in case I'm being strung along for weeks.

Oh, I already fabricated a carrier assembly puller that worked very well, so the really hard part (removing the nut and carrier) is already done. Need to post that one on my "improvised 470 tools" thread. Two steel eye hooks, two barrel nuts, two threaded rods, and a flywheel puller.

Thanks

Re: Carrier assembly o-ring replacement

Let me rephrase the question: Must the prop shaft be pulled in order to get the o-ring seat clean enough to make a good seal?

No there is plenty of room to get in there without pulling the shaft.
