Use a test light and see if you're getting power out of the joystick when you move it. Then check to see if you're getting power to the motor while someone works the joystick. If it died over time, the motor probably gave out. If it died suddenly, then one of two things happened.
If it died while you were using it, then you may have overheated it and tripped a relay. If it just "didn't work" one day, then you may have blown a fuse. Check first for bad grounds or corroded connections.
