I am trying to restore a 1955 cd-12 5.5 hp. replaced the worn clutch dog and changed the seals, now when I put it back together It stays in reverse in the reverse position and in the neutral position. I can get it into neutral if I put the shift lever between the neutral and the forward positions. but any bump will knock it into gear one way or the other. took it apart and reassembled several times, it makes no sense, and I can see no way to adjust it. the clutch dog seems the same as the old one. maybe something is worn out? My project is on hold and I've spent too much to fail now. If anyone can offer any advise It will be much appreciated thanks in advance...Tony

Bent shifter fork (the steel fork that moves the cradle that moves the dog)

When you replaced the clutch dog, did you get the shift fork pin back in place? If the pin isn't seated in the hole in the fork, it can do what you described. Also, is the shift cradle in place on the clutch dog, and the shift fork properly seated on the cradle?

well, thank you both for helping , it was a bent shift fork, after 4 times putting the lower unit together and taking it apart, it works correctly from what I can see. I was not expecting all the extra work but at least I'm learning. now tomorrow I'm putting on the powerhead. I don't see any torque specs anywhere, I am guessing there are none...I will keep you all posted on my progress, thanks again....Tony
