shift rod is attached at the lever and cycling through fnr with normal "feel" and travel, but when turning the ds in any gear, its always in forward? what is the most likely issue?

Pivot pin is not broken is it? If you can still feel the click/click/click everything should still be ok up to where the shift rod bends to attach to the cradle. I would guess there is an issue at that connection. Maybe someone took out the phillips screw before you had it and could not get the pivot pin back in its hole? Just a guess.

May have to drain the oil, flip the motor upside down and remove the skeg to repair.

still waiting on the penetrating oil to do its work to get into the lu, but im 100% positive that the phillips screw hasnt been messed with. shifting feels normal, but when i opened the drain plug, all i got was a few drips of water and a few drips of oil, guess i will find out when and if i can get the gc opened up. ( motor was rescued from underneath a collapsed shed, and had been there for 30 + years....could be a basket case!!! lol)

Ill guess then that there is an issue with the cradle that rides the dog or its connection.

Maybe the dog is rusted to the prop shaft and when you shifted the connection jumped.
I guess you have the powerhead off already and gearcase dropped then?

yeah, just pulled the powerhead, hoping to see an issue at the top of the shift rod, but all is well there. the gearcase is still attached.....bolts felt like they might strip out, so will give them a bit more time before i break out a bigger wrench. now that i think about it, im expecting a serious rust mess in the lu. hopefully its not beyond practical repair.....im quite fond of those cd's! lol

Re: cd 13, shift issues

I had first thought that maybe the connection under the powerhead was at fault until I read that you could hear the shifter engaging/locking into the gears. That is accomplished by 3 grooves cut into the shift rod that a metal tab spring locks into, giving you the click, click, click, which is in the gearcase.

I just went through a troblesome CD myself that gave me alot of grief. It all started with a broken shock absorber. Hopefully yours is ok.

i like that mounting option! never thought about rear mount for the pump. looks like ample clearance for all the lines.

Re: cd 13, shift issues

just got the lu opened up, and the pin that connects the shift rod to the lever was in the bottom of the skeg, rusted beyond being used. amazingly tho, the rest of the parts look to be in great condition. anyone know if that part ( the pin) is still is still available from brp?? or can i just make one from a nail drilled to take a cotter pin??

Re: cd 13, shift issues

I imagine they could still get it. Marineengine still carries them, almost 5 bucks though before shipping!

Evinrude Johnson OMC 0302504 - Pin @ MarineEngine.com

For your first born child Ill mail you one if you cannot find one ;)

I would just find the correct OD stock and drill a hole in either end to accept a cotter pin as you stated.

Re: cd 13, shift issues

Let me know, I have a CD shift rod in a parts bin I could pull the pin out of for you so it wouldnt take me much. Would only cost a stamp to mail, not worried about it. PM me your address.
