Hello fellow boat mechanics,
I have a 71 Johnson 100 hp 4 cyl with the cd amp. It is intermittently sparking and I do not want to spend $200+ for a new one. So I am getting ready to dive into the conversion to coil, condenser, and ballast resistor. I have purchased all 3 for a 1967 New Yorker at Advance auto supply for $33. I have read many of the posts here for doing this conversion, but I still have some reservations which are:
1) Will my points wear faster?
2) Will my spark be weaker for higher RPM's (i.e. power loss)?
3) Do I need to adjust my point gap?
4) Do I need to add any other components than those listed.?

Any one that has done this conversion and has input please let me know how its going.
Thanks:)

Would this conversion work on a 3cyl '71 60hp engine?

I have known of several attempts to do that and have yet to hear of a satisfactory long-term result. As for doing it on the 3-cyl, they have some really wierd points dwell angle.

Besides, most of the grief on those ignition systems is related to the lousy distributor cap--which you still have to stay with.

And yes it is rough on the points, which come at a dear price when/if you can find them.
