i have one battery and one engine, small boat. if i have my cd player on when i start my engine will that hurt the cd player. I know if i trim the outboard up and down it shuts the player off because it takes the voltage away but then i can turn it back on. I'm just worried about if i start the engine with the cd player running already if it will hurt the cd player, if so is there anyway to avoid that?

Yea, turn your CD player off while you're starting the engine. It's not good to subject electronics to huge voltage fluctuations anyway. I'd even wait a few seconds after the engine starts to let the voltage stabilize before turning it back on. Shutting the engine down doesn't cause sudden voltage fluctuations so no need to turn it off when you turn the engine off.

Yea on my Aquasport I have a single battery setup. Basically if the stereo is connected to the starting battery, keep it off until the engine is on. Your stereo probably wants like 10 amps whereas the starter runs somewhere around the hundreds depending on size of motor. Speaking of voltage fluctuations, make sure your stereo is fused appropriately for its amperage cause its a must when your battery is being charged, cranked, used, its just so risky having an over voltage and a 50 cent fuse is much cheaper to replace than a $300 stereo
