What are some good 2 speaker set up systems for boats? (CC so I think I'll mount them on the console) But I was just wondering are there any decks out there that support SD cards or maybe even a USB flash drive so I can use music from my computer.

If you can't find what you need at Best Buy, Circuit City, Crutchfield, or any of the other gazillion audio stores you won't find in the marine stores either.

Never seen one like that. But I have seen and own one with an AUX input right on the face. I plug my I-Pod into it and it works great. No CDs to worry about. Just turn it on and go. More music than I can listen to in a week!

Re: CD Player for Boat

I was in the same boat as you last year (no pun intended ;)) - but didn't need speakers. Not sure if you're struggling with marine versus car but I went back and forth on this decision. I finally decided to buy a decent Panasonic car cd player (can't remember the model now) that can play mp3's (cd's). The car cd player actually sounds decent (with the original speakers which aren't anything to write home about) and if it does get wet or ruined, I didn't dump a whole lot of $$ into it.

I was a bit worried about marine versus car but there was already a cover for the entire player (it already had an older tape player). We like to play in the water but don't go crazy and get everything soaked. Will you have to install a new one or is this just a replacement?

Do you really need to use USB or SD? Would you consider using an MP3 player? How about an aux input in the faceplate? I would have done that, but last year there just weren't any out there in my price range. We could use our MP3 player ... maybe I do have one in the rear (can't remember). Just things to think about.... I'm a total geek so I love to look for this (and use) this type of stuff!

Other things to consider:
- Power rating (per whatever speakers you buy)
- Subwoofer outputs?
- Preamp outputs?
- Aux inputs (faceplate or rear)

While I was out there shopping (Best Buy), I saw many car cd players that used the SD and/or USB connections. If you look for marine, you'll pay 2-3x more for those features. Not sure what your budget is, but here's a cheaper one with USB support:

JVC has several car audio models that have either SD or USB ports on the front panel this year. They also have models that play MP3/WMA data CDs, aux 1/8" inputs,...or several combos of the above options.

Most marine models unless they specifically have a clamshell front cover (Pioneer and Kenwood in particular) are nothing more than the regular car audio line with white trim instead of black/grey/etc. Maybe with a solid top cover to help keep moisture from dripping in. Doesn't matter if it's a marine unit or not...put a weather cover over it.

JVC has a premium line called "Arsenal" that has a 3-year warranty instead of the 1yr warranty of the standard JVC lineup.

I used to sell car audio when I was running my electronic repair shop. Still keep up contact with my distributors (JVC, Kenwood, Blaupunkt decks) since I still do custom installs on the side in my days away from my new job.

I personally am a JVC fan and would recommend the brand even if I didn't sell em.

Vampirefish/ All-

Trying to install a Sony CD player into my '01 Bayliner- stereo is brand new and works but when I hook it up, nothing. Seems like a power supply issue- Novice boater, just curious if this is common or something simple I am overlooking. All other electronics work fine, incl. depth/ fishfinder...

Re: CD Player for Boat

I have a Scout Sportfish and I am having the same issues. Make sure you are running two wires to power. There is a red and yellow wire. The yellow must be hooked up for the radio to work. The yellow is for memory and clock. It I ran the power (red and yellow) to a aux switch and the black to what I thought was the ground wire. Every time I turn the radio on it shuts down my running lights, nav lights and bilge. I am having a hard time figuring out why this is happening. I am guessing that I should not be running the ground to the panel. I am looked on line for answers and I am having a hard time finding anything. I was thinking about running the ground wire all the way back to the battery but someone told that was a bad idea. Anyones input would be great. I hope this helps you with knowing about the yellow wire.

Re: CD Player for Boat

Every gauge on your dash has a ground terminal on it. Connect the ground wire from your stereo to one of those. Running the power wires to an auxiliary switch is a waste because you already have a power switch on stereo. Tap into the +12V line at the fuse panel. People have a tendency to ground speakers to the chassis of the boat (or their car). That is a no-no and has been for years. Each speaker has its own POS and NEG lines exiting the stereo. So a pair of wires needs to run to each speaker from the head unit. Forget about high output stereos on the water. It is extremely annoying to be on the water listening to water lap at your boat only to have someone halfway down the lake blasting away trying to impress everyone within a half mile.
