Does anyone have any recommendations for a CD player / radio ?? I was looking for one that may have a little 'memory' on it, to avoid the CD skipping when the boat is running thru waves.... I cant seem to find any marine units that have that feature, although I know that all of the little portable 'diskmans' have it. I want something that would be flush mounted where it may be exposed to the elements, so I need one that is waterproof as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanks

I dont know about the CD player itself but mine is mounted behind a water proof cover with an opaque lid covering the face plate. I think I got it at West for arround $30

Clarion makes one that does not have to be mounted behind anything. It is a pretty nice radio and they have a remote that you can mount on the back of the boat that is waterproof also. Don't know about the reahead though.

from the literature that i look at, I see that the Clarion models are waterproof (nice), but I cant seem to tell if any of them have the anti-skip memory on the CD players.... can anyone either confirm/deny this??? or suggest a model that does have that feature?? thanks again!

Don't know what it all means, but the clarion xmd1 I just instaled 8x oversampling digital filter and dual 1bit da converter (is this skip protection?). Radio looks, and sounds great, less than 100$ on e-bay, refurbished.

Jim

The oversampling reflects the number of times a bit is read before it is played. 8x is pretty much a standard and you should have no skipping problems.

Actually, oversampling has nothing to do with how many times a bit is read. All CD players read the bits only once. Oversampling is a technology for conversion of those bits from digital to analog signal that you can hear. The "digital to analog converter" (DAC) is run at multiples of the CD frequency of 44Khz in order to produce higher fidelity sound with cheaper DACs (8x means 8 times 44Khz). It is pretty much a standard practice in all the CD players you are likely to buy in this market.

So if you need a system with a buffer, you need to look for that feature or it will skip. In general, I am not aware of in-dash units with buffers. Only the disc changes have it typically and they do this with shock absorbers rather than memory buffers.

A better solution these days, if you are computer savvy, is to not bother at all with a CD player. Simply get a protable digital audio player, load up your songs on the PC, and then transfer them to the player. Then simply bring the player to the boat, hook it up through an "AUX" input on the deck and you will have hours of music with no skipping! And you have a great portable audio player for when you are not on the boat! Let me know if you are interested in this option and I can explain more....

Amir
