My CD player for the pooter has quit on me. It spins for a second or two and then quits. I get an error notice. Any ideas? They don't cost too much nowadays, how hard is it to replace? I have replaced modems but nothing else.

Simple as riding a mechanical horse KB :D

It'd be a no brainer, especially since you already have one installed. Just make sure the jumper is selected the same way as your old one.

Re: CD Rom problems

Go god people tell him the truth.
1. Buy a new Drive.
To remove the old drive there might be 4 screws on it. Two to each side.
1. Remove the screws.
1a. If the drive has rails on both sides there will be release pins on each side of drive.
Remove the drive and take off the drive rails.

On the rear of the drive there are TWO cables.
-Grey and thin
-white plug with 4 wires.
Look closely at both.
3. Remove them gently try not to tug on wires.
on the rear of the drive you will see a block that looks like this

:::: Above this you may see

MA SL and CBSEL
-Master
-Slave
-Cable select
there will be a small jumper that is a block about 1/4" square with a wire inside. This wire connect two pins together.
As stated above make sure you new drive matches the old drive.

Now the 4 wire connector has a D shape to it and only goes in the drive 1 way.
Pkug it in.
The grey wire has a keyway and a red or black edge. Make sure you have this oriented and insert into new drive.
Put it back with the same screws you removed.

There are no drivers for the new drive windows will install it automaticallly.

There are drivers and software for other thing such as DVD or CDRW. This will come in the box and you will install after you install drive.
Hope this helps.

Building a Computer an article I wrote for fun and profit!

Don't forget about the audio cable as well, and is it SCSI or IDE. (most likely IDE) If its a compaq it may only have 2 screews holding it in.
should be a piece of cake to change.

Rwise with Windows XP no need for that cable unless you want to listen from the front headphone jack.
