Hey guys, so i finally got the old1954 CD11 started but........it only starts with handle in fast position , and when i throttle down to just before half throttle it shuts right down and only starts back up in fast position, thinking maybe a carb issue, maybe low speed jets, i have good spark.
Also i noticed when running in neutral in the tank it blows bubbles, is this exhaust or a problem.
Thanks

Yea, I'm betting low speed. Lightly seat it then turn it 1 1/2 turns out. If that doesn't work, then remove the needle and make sure the tip of it, isn't broke off inside. I have seen that one before. Those are sweet little motors. As of now, I have 5 of the 5.5's. Three of them, include the old green Johny's. ;)

Bubbles are fine. Is it pumping water as well out of the exhaust relief port?

Dont pay too much attention to the markings on the collar on the tiller handle, they are not usually accurate. To start, ensure it is in neutral, then advance throttle to the stop. Might not be on the "START" portion of the collar but dont worry about that, as stated they are usually not lined up properly anymore, just a sort of guide at best.

That being said, you still have an issue. I would definately go through the carb if you have not already. I do on every motor I aquire. Secondly, ensure the ignition system is up to snuff. Have you pulled the flywheel and ensured the coils are new, points set and clean, plug wires not corroded, condensors not leaking? ETC.....?

All my CDS i can slow right down to nothing, almost counting the RPMS, and have to choke them to kill them.

Re: CD11 first start

I just baught this mototr a few months ago so today was my first run, the only position it starts in is fast or a little bit before ,so first thing i will do is a carb rebuild, probaly hasnt been done in years.I was concerned about the large bubbles in neutral as i thaught it exhausted out the pee hole where the water pump spits out water, following a carb kit i will replace entire ignition system, i just wnted to hear it run before i rebuild it. Thanks again .

Don't forget a new gas line when you rebuild the carb.

Rick was, I think, suggesting that the op sell it so Rick could purchase it for his own use. I have two of those motors, and they are cute little guys. Make sure you replace the impeller on it while you are going through it.

Ricks pretty funny,he knows im gonna hold onto it, but if i do sell it, he will be notified first.
But just to clarify, it does exhaust below the water line and thats why i see large bubbles in neutral.

That was an insider joke. I tried to make Stickler an offer on it some time ago but he, very politely, said no. I should have explained that to the forum. I'm cheering for him about it now though. Stickler and I live an hours drive from each other which is very unusual on this forum. Rick.

Re: CD11 first start

54 was the year I was born and I've been trying without success to get one. So this fall I bought two 5.5's. A 57 Johnson and a 59 Evinrude. I decided I would just lie about my age. Haven't had time to work on mine yet but will be as soon as I build a new vanity cabinet and upgrade a bathroom. Rick.

LOL yea, as you can see by my collection, I love those models too. Five 5.5's and two Fleetwins. I have a nice little '57 CD that I just picked up. It had a blown head gasket when I got it. All it needs now is a cover. Aparently, it was misplaced. LOL How does one misplace something THAT big. LOL :D:D
