cd16 what keeps it in gear?

Is there a ball/spring assembly that keeps the gears engaged? I have an extra shift linkage and it has three indentions in the rod that looks like it would be how it stays in gear, mine keeps poping out of gear at full throttle. At low speed it doesn't pop out, just a full throttle and it take a few minutes for it to pop out it doesn't do it as soon as it is throttled up. Could this be the clutch dog?

If it's like my 7.5 those are the detents, they ride on 2 flat detent springs down in the lower unit, I'm assuming they provide a positive shift to prevent someone from shifting slowly. I'm thinking the clutch dog is worn out. Pull it apart and have a look. But don't take my word, wait for another opinion.

Sounds like a worn clutch dog/forward gear to me.

Yes, the flat springs riding in the grooves are what makes it snap into gear and stay there. But if the clutch dog and forward gear are worn out they will overpower the detent and it will pop out of gear.
