CDI power pack issues

I bought a used CDI power pack for my 1995 johnson 130. It is a 113-4041 part # CDI power pack which I believe is the right one for my boat (J130TLEO) However when I put the power pack on the motor now has no spark. The seller said it was a working power pack but I have nothing. I had spark with the old power pack. I checked everything and all is hooked up correctly with a good ground. What could the issue be? A bad power pack? I put dielectric grease on the coil wire connections coming off the power pack going on the coils...could this do something negative?

Re: CDI power pack issues

The old power pack would give me issues when the engine warmed up...it would begin to miss at WOT. Had several people on this forum tell me it was some sort of heat issue in the power pack so I figured I would replace it and see what happened...

WOT issues can be caused by several issue including bad plug wires and coils. I would hook the old power pack backup and see if you have spark. If you do then you know for a fact that the CDI pack is did and it is not a connector or something else. Use the CDI guide to help you troubleshoot.

Re: CDI power pack issues

I checked the spark before I bought this power pack and I did have spark with an open gap tester at 7/16". It would only act up after several minutes of running WOT. It wouldnt act up at mid throttle. I have replace all fuel lines, cleaned tank, rebuilt carbs, and new plugs. Is the silicone type materials on the inside of the power pack supposed to be hard or squishy cause my old one was squishy?

The only reason I suggested hooking up the old pack was to verify that it isn't something else causing you not to have spark. You have no spark with the CDI unit now if you go back to the original one and you have spark you know the CDI one is toast and you may have to purchase another power pack. I would run a couple of test before blaming the power pack. A bad rectifier can cause issues too. I don't know if the silicon should be hard or soft how was it on the CDI power pack?

How does a bad rectifier cause ignition probs ? I thought ignition and battery charging were different systems.

They are different. The bad rectifier will not effect ignition, based on my experience of many years. You need to check the stator windings and output. You need to check the trigger. You need to check the boat and engine harness. Then you need to focus on the power pack you just bought. If you don't have a manual or a mulitmeter with a dv ability, give up and take it to a service shop.

Re: CDI power pack issues

Boobie I agree they are totally separate circuits however step two in the CDI guide for no spark is to disconnect the rectifier and for a miss at speed it is step one. A bad rectifier can cause the power pack not to fire. It happened on my 35 triple last summer the rectifier melted down and when it started acting up the engine would die and would not restart until the rectifier was cold. After the rectifier had it final melt down the only way I could get the engine to fire was to disconnect the rectifier.

I figure the Engineers at CDI know a lot more about electronic ignitions than I do.

Re: CDI power pack issues

Battery charge coil and ignition coil are winded upon the same core and use the same magnets. That's the coupling.
A possibility could be that excessive dc current is flowing through the charge coil when just one of the diodes is shorted. This could make the core material saturate reducing magnetic induction.

Re: CDI power pack issues

OK so Im not understanding all that you guys are talking about being Im not a boat mechanic. Thank you multimech for the input however I cant afford a mechanic. Plus I would like to learn. I put the old power pack on and it has great spark just like before. So Im thinking I need to buy a new power pack and see what happens on the water. Ensign thanks for the link...awesome info.
