Hello I have received this 1969 Evinrude 55hp motor and we have no spark. I have gotten a instruction book from the library and dun all the testing for no spark and points look good and I have also cleaned up a bunch of broke wires. Every test I do keep pointing back to the Electronic ignition box now I have tried to call around looking for the part and I can't seem to find one under $400.00. I live IN Oshawa Ontario, Canada if any one knows someone in the South Ontario region that deals with used parts that may have this part for cheaper if you could let me know...thanks

Hi Roger
There are a ton of of OMC motors around of this vintage, that use this ignition system. Most are in pertty fair condition mechanicly. The trouble with them is , as you know by now is the electrical system is shot. The unfortunate thing is used amplifiers usually won't last. If you hook up a new after-market unit to a patched up wireing loom, odds are you will need a new amp. every week. The only way to remedy this problem is an all or nothing attitude. You need good wires, good batt, good amp, good points, ETC. If anything in the system is marginal, it's new box time Baby. You will probably be able to purchess a newer model motor ready to go , for less than the needed repairs on you 55hp. If you decide to stay with it, the least expencive way to go is all the way.

Ya I know about how bad the wiring is on the motor it's been hell and who ever did the work before me did a terrible job. I got this boat and motor on a "take it away it is yours deal" it's all in good shape and I figure I'll work on it as a side project I have cleaned up a bunch of the wiring and replaced a bunch of it and I am pretty sure that I have gotten all the bad points just ready to get the bad boy going but I have just bought a house and I have a bit of a budget and 400.00 for this amp is not part of that so I am hoping to find a cheep one clean up all the wiring and get her on the water so I can have some fun. ;) I'll try to contact that www.partsagogo.com. I know it's not a vary big part so maybe If I can get who ever to UPS it to me or something I would pay for the shipping and handling...If any one has one let me know thanks…

I don't know what I would have to do to change over the Hole ignition system would be nice though. I have looked vary hard and ended up finding a used one they are out there just hard to find...I still have not gotten it going yet though it will try to start but won't go or stay going I am prety much at the end of summer so I am probably going to see if someone can take it in for the winter and see about getting it started so I can have it for next summer I know there is probably something small I am missing but I am not a pro just a part time boat motoro mechanic....hope you have good luck. :(

P.s: make shure you check all wiriing.

Swap over to points/coil. You'll foul plugs a little more easily, & have to check your point gap every 200 hours, but otherwise pretty troublefree. Talk to any older car mechanic on how to set it up, or look at the mid-60s OMCs that did it, or search the archives here.
