Center/side console

Hi, I'm new here... and relatively new to boating... so here it goes.

Just picked up a 16 ft Lowe with an older 25 hp Johnson Seahorse. The motor is not a tiller and it was never rigged for a console. Seller said he used a wooden handle to steer it. Well, that's not good enough for me. I can fabricate a center or side console (haven't decided yet), but how would I go about getting the steering together and the power controls? Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to iboats

Yes you can convert that motor to remote controls and steering but it will cost you a bit of coin ;)

You need to establish the year of the motor from the data plate to make sure you get the right throttle and shift controls ........ the steering controls are usually easy to fit.

Ebay is a place to pick up used controls however, the length of the cables will be determined in the console placement.

you first have to decide if center or side console. then the choices begin.

I'd suggest side on a 16; you will have more room in the boat that way.

Re: Center/side console

I've decided on a side console from the center seat. I'll look at the motor in the morning and figure out what year it is. I figure it couldn't be too much trouble to link up throttle and ignition, but it sounds as if steering might be the easiest to rig up. Anyone have an inexpensive steering kit they's recommend or a little trick to rig one up?
