I used Bilgekote in my bilge but in hindsight, I could have used the tractor paint with the hardener and it would probably hold up better.....and been cheaper. Weatherman is promising 3 or 4 rain free days down in this corner of the state so I'm going to play hooky on Friday to finish up this box and take care of a few other honey do projects keeping me from getting back to the Century.

89 Resorter - It's been awhile since I logged on and checked you progress, looking good from what I've read. I've been dealing with a pole barn issue which has taken precedence over any boat projects, always something. Anyway, glad you;re still plugging away at it.

I have been plugging away but it has been verrrrrry slowly. I have been repairing some gel coat imperfections that appeared after I sanded in preparation for the final coat but nothing picture worthy yet. I took a couple of days off over the upcoming 4th holiday and hope to be able to get the repairs completed so that I can begin thinking about the final coating. Admiral has had my weekends pretty much booked up with motorcycle and ATV rides. I was finally able to get my old dock box done and back to my dock (I guess I can consider that some progress). Good luck with your pole barn. I have a similar project I'm hoping to pull off next spring when I build a machine shed on the side of my pole building.... thinking 15' x 50' to store my daughter's pontoon and eventually the Coronado.

Thanks for following up …. oh yeah, a little evidence to prove that the dock box is finally done.

Yep, great looking box. I started re-reading your post from the start for some inspiration and to freshen my memories of how you did things, looking forward to reading it all again!

Thanks guys. I'm hoping that I can now get a day here and there to make some progress on the Coronado but just learned from the Admiral that our week vacation in July will be spent riding the bike down to the Smokey Mountains. She promised me that any vacation day after that can be spend on the boat …… we'll see :ballchain:

Wow …. almost three months since my last post but I have been getting some time here and there to work on the Century. Used thickened gel coat to patch the pin holes and moth damage from when I sprayed the first couple of coats late last summer. Got all that sanded down now but I ended up over sanding in a couple of areas so I plan to play hooky tomorrow to touch up spray those areas to get them to the right thickness. My daughter & SIL bought a canvas storage shelter to store the pontoon this winter so I figured I would borrow the frame to build my redneck paint booth to finish my gel coating.

Not sure how long it will be till the daughter wants her shelter back so I figure use it while I can. Normally we would have to take our docks out sometime this month due to low water but the 9" of rain we got last weekend brought the lake 10 feet above normal summer pool. It's very rare that we run out of weather before we run out of water but it looks like it may be one of those years.

Ha 89, look at it this way, you sanded through in some ares, we all know how to do that, BUT it really is a learning experience to understand how to patch ares as well. instead of a boo boo, it is merely an educational experience. Always look for the bright side... Looks good to me. I like the painting setup you have now. :thumb:

Nice booth, 89, and the Coranado looks great! But I'm afraid it might take on some water that way

Yea GM …. getting a lot of education with this gel coating thing. Garbage Guy, it would actually take on a good bit of H20 even if it was flipped back over with those two big 4" through hull exhaust openings not shown in the pics. fibersport, this summer has been busier than most since I am also re-storing the deck on my house so I have not given up, just need more days in my weekends (I'll have to talk to my employer bout that one). I did get all of the thin areas touched up this past weekend so I got a little taste of accomplishment. Here are some proof pics …..

Masked up and ready to spray

Before pic of the worst area (this is where the moth did its thing)

Same area after three touch up coats. First two without wax and then the third with. The first two looked a lot better than this so I am thinking that the wax had something to do with the spatter look. The good news is that it cured hard so I guess I'll find out how well it sands next weekend. Plan is to get it knocked down with 180 grit to remove as much orange peel as possible before spraying the final thinned coat.

Maybe gun was spraying too much air and shooting clumps that were setting off at tip

Don't know the tip size you used, but it looks like the paint (gelcoat) was a little thick. Maybe try a little thinner and see if that helps. Just a suggestion.

The gel coating was thinned 10% with patch booster and I sprayed using a 2.5mm tip at about 45 psi. The first two coats looked really good and it was only the last coat with the wax in it that looked like the picture. I'm wondering if it may have had something to do with the surfacing wax... idk. :noidea:

Mickey, I used the same combination last fall when I sprayed the entire hull and it worked fine. I'm think I remember seeing that the wax has a shelf life. Not sure what it is off hand but I used the same stuff I had from last fall so it may be too old. Its cheap stuff so I think I will order a new container for the final spray and do some testing first.
