Ceramic pads

My trailer needs new brake pads, it has Kodiak brakes and I am thinking of putting ceramic pads on it. I understamd almost all the people that put them on their drag race cars, have taken them off. I know a boat trailer is not a race car, but don't want to waste the money if they are not good for a boat trailer thats used in salt water.

Re: Ceramic pads

Ceramic brake pads are used for a number of reasons, mostly because they handle heat better than organic or semi-metallic pads do. They also tend to be quieter then most standard pads and they produce a less noticeable brake dust on the rims.
The draw backs to ceramic is often a required higher braking pressure and tend to wear the rotor faster than a normal pad will. This is often a bigger problem on softer metals, including stainless steel.

I'd probably stay with the OEM pads for a few reasons, first of which would be that the brake system on your trailer was designed to work with the type of pads it came with. Second, trailer rotors are the most expensive part of the system, ceramic pads may eat up the rotors prematurely. Last, if they require more pedal pressure to stop in a car, how will you compensate for that at the trailer which is most likely using surge brakes which pretty much have a set pressure applied by the trailer's own weight. You may find that the ceramic pads don't grab as well at that pressure.

Re: Ceramic pads

Kodiak SS kits now ship with the ceramic pads.

I have older Kodaik SS brakes and I use standard pads. They usually rust away before they wear out. The ceramic may have a better back plate and material than the automotive brakes I use.

The accellerated wear of rotors will keep me with regular pads.

Re: Ceramic pads

My understanding for the reason that Kodiak switched to the ceramic pads is that the outer pad was wearing too fast. I notice that with mine that the outer pad wears twice a fast as the inner.

Re: Ceramic pads

I've only changed mine twice. When one got close I changed them all. $38.00 from autozone as I recall.
