Hi All, My dad recently aquired a mid 50's Champion 5Hp. We mounted it on a boat, and fired it up. It had been gone thru by a collector who had cleaned it up good, rebuilt the carb and checked the lower unit.

I was a little surprised that it started right up. I did notice a problem with the carb adjust. It leaks fuel and isn't tight enough to stay put when you adjust it, but if you hold it still the motor runs like a champion (pun intended).

I need to pull off the cowl to see what the carb looks like, but I am pretty sure it just needs either to tighted the packing or to add a packing washer.

Does anyone know anything about these motors? When were they built? where were they sold? what happened to the company?

Thanks,

Re: Champion 5HP

See if your library has a copy of "The Old Outboard Book" by Peter Hunn. It has several pages devoted to the Champion history--too much to type out here for you. If they don't have it, you probably can get a copy at amazon.com.
