Will just painting it give me the gloss finish of the orginal gel coat? Will it last?

Dano, I have been told that most yachts have Imron or Awlgrip (2 part polyurethane) paint on them, since the quality of the finish is superior to gelcoat. I had a boat painted with Awlgrip. It is not as tough(or thick) as the gelcoat, but has a very nice look to it.

I don't think you understand what you are asking. It's not as easy as getting a spray can from Ace hardware. The prep work is what will cost you the BIG MONEY (read thousands of dollars. Good marine two part paint isn't cheap and it isn't usable below the water line. Gelcoat is thick, compaired to paint. Bounce off an unprotected dock the paint will scrape to the primer. Gelcoat will scrape, but the color will still be there. If the money is burning a hole in your pocket, trade your boat in and spend the money on something you will be happy with.

I would not trust just anyone to do this work. I had a guy repair a jet ski of mine one time---a 4-inch ding cost me $650.

If you have someone in your area who works on Corvettes (fiberglass body) they can give you an idea of what this takes.

I know plenty of folks that have done it them selves for a couple of hundred dollars in paint and supplies.I personally spent more than $3000 to have my 30 footer done with Imron. It really depends what size boat it is and what condition the hull is in and what you want the finished product to look like.I wanted mine to look new.I painted an 18 footer when I was a teenager and did nothing more than scuff the hull with sand paper and sprayed enamel hull paint with an airless sprayer and I thought it looked great.Cost me about $50 at the time.Charlie

PS---the same guy who fixed the busted fiberglass on my jet ski also made my 1976 Cobalt look brand new---without painting it.
