I want to change to pre mix oil on my 150 mariner. Anyone done this before or know what all needs to be done? Your help is greatly appreciated.

It can be done, it's not too difficult.

It would involve removing the pump and shaft and blanking the mounting point. Removing the warning module and plugging the pressure port on the engine for the oil tank. Removing the engine mounted oil tank and all the oil lines and plugging the oil ports in the fuel pump.

But why do you want to do it?

Because I have oil coming out of the mid section and also the carbs. What do I use to blank the mounting point and plugging ports?

Why not just fix the problem, it will be a lot easier than removing all that stuff.

Probably just a bad bleeder check valve. Worse case a bad reed (doubt it). No need to remove the oil pump. If it's pumping too much oil check the pump adjustment or replace the pump.

Simply removing the pump and driven gear and then blocking off the pump will make #2 lazier than it already is. There is a block off kit that has a block off plate with a filler to make up some of the space that would help with the laziness. I think Diamond Marine or Pro Marine USA has them.

I remove oil pumps only if I'm rebuilding a engine. This way I can use epoxy to properly balance the intake chambers. That's the correct way and it's not something you can do in a weekend or in the driveway.

Where is the bleeder check valve? How do I know if it is bad?

How do I keep this thread on main page so can be seen by someone who can help with this valve?

Patience grasshopper. This is a bulletin board, not a telephone call.

I suspect you have a very simple problem with the oil system. However, you have not given us enough information to psyche it out for you.]

Does oil accumilate when the engine is off?

Is there pressure in the boat tank after engine has been off for 10 minutes?

Is the oil pump linkage adjusted properly?

Is oil leaking from the engine reservoir cap?

Is oil leaking from the open ended hose T'd into the boat tank line?

You get the idea.

If you do decide to take the oil system off, then you can be bothered with proper fuel/oil mixing every time you fill the gas tank. Can't let the teenage nephew fill it either. Also, use the proper block off parts or you could have your engine trying to digest the oil pump shaft end bushing that stays in the engine.

Oh, by the way, the bleeder/check valve is the fitting low on the engine, forward starboard side that the pressure line for the boat oil tank is on. Depending on answers to questions above, it could be the culprit.

hope it helps

Thanks. I will check the valve out. Will it just be stopped up if bad? Sorry for the impatience!

The best way to limit the cost of repair parts is systematic diagnostics. If you answer the questions I can help you.

That is a multiple function valve. It supplies crankcase pressure, limited in pressure when running, and allows the air in the boat oil tank to bleed off into the crankcase when the engine is shut off.

Do the diagnostics before you decide to mess with parts.

hope it helps

Why sigh? Isnt pre mix a safer way to go in the long run.

Some claim so, but the oil mixing system on that motor is very reliable. It is probably more reliable than an impatient grasshopper relying on himself to properly calculate and mix the oil and gas every time he fuels up. I consider mine more reliable than me, and much more reliable than my teenage son.

In addition, it varies the rate, so you get much oil at WOT when you need it, and can idle for fairly long times without loading up. Some will say that when you can it off idle, it's lean. The carbs refill with fuel in every 6 seconds at WOT, so that's not a major problem unless you're dumping in nitrous at the hole shot.

I remember seeing a grown man cry on the boat landing last year. He had decided to take a quick run with a nice vintage merc small outboard, and forgot the oil. It locked up. He was a wise, experienced, mature man, and he missed it.

I see your point. Thanks for your help. I am babysitting my 6 month old grandson right now. Will check further on motor later this afternoon. Watching grandson is alot more fun than mechanican. Ha!

Totally Agree... ;)
