2700 bucks, not too bad actually. I assume fuel tank access is a must and return lines must be run. I will save that link, perhaps a project for he future. I dare not estimate what a shop would charge to install that.

"on the plus side I don't know what I'm talking about" ............. LOL

Ayuh,..... It's an awfully hard conversion it justify,... Especially financially,...

You'd have to run the motor daily for a lifetime to save the money, in fuel costs,....

It can be done..... it can not be done cheep.

companies like AZ speed marine have been doing it for many many years.

Here are my suggestions

if your friend's motor doesnt run, or run well, clean and rebuild the carb.
If your friend just want sEFI because your friend thinks its going to a boat load of fuel economy - guess again.
if your friend really wants EFI - sell the existing boat and one with EFI
If your friend found EFI from a donar automobile and wants to convert the existing motor to EFI using non marine components fill out an insurance policy with you as the beneficiary and tell him to go out alone.

Just a note; These are the kind of projects guys like us do for the heck of it and just to see if we can. There's no justification. We do stuff like this because we can. Besides we get left alone if we go out in the garage and bang a few tools around and say a few swear words loudly. Then we can turn on our hidden TV and watch ball games all afternoon unmolested. Maybe throw a tool every half hour or so and yell "Dadgummit!"

Re: change motor over to fuel injection ?

I converted mine to EFI by picking a complete used system off ebay years ago. I had a new crate motor and picked up the system from a guy going to blowers on his twin setup. Went pretty well and while I have had some issues with running rich at idle it's been great. Holley puts out a real good system and this place has them on sale. I'm glad I went with the Merc setup because I have so little space I have to lay across the engine to get to the starboard side, and the one listed below would make it rough on the chest.

Agree, WaltT sometimes we just want to do it because it's shop time

for the cost of an EFI setup, I will be building a 406 stroker

The replies on this post are right on. For a 50th of the cost of FI you can have an ultimate custom quadrajet MADE for you. When you have a truly custom carb made for you're particular application the results are generally better than fuel injection. Especially when using the q jet. Small primaries rule for fuel economy. The cost of marine fuel injection is just too high. The replies on this post are right on.

Re: change motor over to fuel injection ?

Fuel injection is fun and frustrating, great for cold turn key start's and fun to tinker with for fuel econ and changing up the timing a bit. Even the very best system out there will see litle gain over a good carb either fuel econ or power increase's. I can see if one was building a 700 hp turbo or supercharged motor where programming in fuel and spark curves could be beneficial....In our everday boat's...No difference aside from turn key starting and difficult diagnostic and repair.

Sorry about that but it is a opinion based off personal experieince...and cost did i mention cost.

Re: change motor over to fuel injection ?

Fuel Injection is great for big-cammed engines to get them to idle and transition smoothly to WOT. Carbs are a little sensitive to the mixed signals they get from a big overlap cam, so you usually have to set the idle up higher and richer or drill holes in the butterflies for air flow, and that messes with the accel pump linkage so you have to tune around that, plus there is some "resistance" the engine sees as it draws air in thru the carb as it meters out the fuel. With a throttle body the air goes on in without having some of it being diverted to meter fuel based on airflow.

Walt, I wish i had some help for you. I have new(er) boat fever so bad I can barely make it over to the keyboard... :)

Happy Holidays all!

Re: change motor over to fuel injection ?

Got a new Summit Racing catalog.. Been looking at when the Denver Boat Show is going on... Somewhere in the back of my head I can sense something is being designed and built, tested, and torn down again then built again with different parts. I also sense being served divorce papers..

Mac, nothing can ever replace our Hydros. Nothing even comes close in terms of the ride and "turns on rails"
