Seeing someone else`s question made me think of one.
Should flame arrestors be changed periodically ( I have a Mercruiser 3.0)?

I think the thin metal element units just need to be cleaned but really dotn need to be replaced unless you have some broken elements and gaps in the screen.

I do have what appears to be a paper one on my 4.3 that problably could be changed out every other season perhaps. It looks like a cheeper unit that whats on my 7.4 which is a metal element screen.

Re: Change out flame arrestor?

is it damaged?

mine looks like a bunch of discs stacked on top of each other. cant think of what could go wrong with it.
i clean it all the time. twice a season. (short season)
i imagine if you had a k&n it would need to be changed every few years. but the metal ones ..... cant think of a reason!

p.s if your not sure....stand real close to the carb...light off a couple of emergency flares.......and youll have yer answer!!!!!
disclaimer....(kidding..dont try this at home! )

cheers

Ayuh,........

If you look Under that piece of Plastic,..........
You'll see you have the same little stack of aluminum plates called a Flame Arrester on your motor too..........

Btw,..........
I Agree....... No reason to Replace a Flame Arrester unless it gets Smashed,+ Trashed,............
Just clean it with some solvent,+ dry it out.........

Unless it is a K&N, they use the same oiled cotton gauze(in addition to the mesh screen) as the auto filters. Could be mistaken for a paper element.

I don't believe that the Coast Guard ever approved ANY filter material, paper or gauze, for marine use because of the fire potential.

METAL ONLY.

Yes, it is your boat and your life, but what about the guy that is going to try to save your sorry *****? He has a wife and kids.

It's OK, you can believe it. They did it. USCG regs click here states that "All gasoline engines must be equipped with an acceptable means of backfire flame control.". They then break down three "acceptable means of backfire flame control for gasoline engines"

They are:

i) A backfire flame arrester complying with SAE J-1928(ALL K&N flame arrestors meet this standard and are so marked) or UL 1111 and marked accordingly. The flame arrester must be suitably secured to the air intake with a flametight connection.

(ii) An engine air and fuel induction system which provides adequate protection from propagation of backfire flame to the atmosphere equivalent to that provided by an acceptable backfire flame arrester. A gasoline engine utilizing an air and fuel induction system, and operated without an approved backfire flame arrester, must either include a reed valve assembly or be installed in accordance with SAE J-1928.

(iii) An arrangement of the carburetor or engine air induction system that will disperse any flames caused by engine backfire. The flames must be dispersed to the atmosphere outside the vessel in such a manner that the flames will not endanger the vessel, persons, on board, or nearby vessels and structures. Flame dispersion may be achieved by attachments to the carburetor or location of the engine air induction system. All attachments must be of metallic construction with flametight connections and firmly secured to withstand vibration, shock, and engine backfire. Such installations do not require formal approval and labeling but must comply with this subpart.

METAL ONLY.

Wrong again, the only time the USCG stipulates "Metal Only" is in section (iii) and this setup IS NOT a flame arrestor at all. It is simply an intake pipe that leads overboard. And although it only states that the connections need to me metal, I would still recomend that in this case then entire thing be made of metal.

...but what about the guy that is going to try to save your sorry *****?

PC response: I am deeply touched and appreciate your concern for my well being.

Not appropriate response.

He has a wife and kids.

Do you know him? Perhaps he is a SHE, they have started allowing that you know?

Re: Change out flame arrestor?

Well, thanks for all the replies-----the marina where i keep my boat is going to winterize it and they said they look everything over and will let me know if it needs anything-it is a mercury shop, so i wll leave it up to them.
My brother in law has used them for years, so i think i will let them handle everything.

Most metal flame arrestors just need a can of carb cleaner at the end of every season.

Be sure to remove it first. If you hold it up to the sun light you should be able to see through it, if not clean it with carb cleaner until you can see light through the plates.
