Ok here where i am at as of now. I have a 1987 chis craft 210 LTD. It has a alpha one gen 1 on it. I replaced the impeller but i dont know if it is working. I am new to all this and need a little help. I am only running it on the muffs. The engine is still getting really hot. What spots should the water be coming out from the back? Most of it is coming from where the propeller is. I see there is 2 exhaust exits one on each side by the transom and i think water was coming out a little from there. Should it be? What shoud i check or look for from here. any help would be great.

It should be coming from those three spots, and it should be warm from them. Do you have a temp guage? What is it telling you?

When was the last time it had a new thermostat?

Was it over heating when you replaced the impeller? How did the old impeller look? Any missing pieces off the impeller? Sometimes, the impeller will break off into little pieces and lodge themself into water passages. You could try backflushing the engine.

There wasnt any big chunks missing that i can think of. But yes it was getting hot before i change the impeller. I dont think water was coming out of the ports on the side as much after i changed the impeller. I did it step by step so i am pretty sure i didnt miss anything. how do i back flush the engine?

If your sure you did the impeller right then you need to look elsewhere. A lot of things can cause an overheat. Like I said before bad thermostat, or bad or plugged up manifolds and risers. Possibly water shutters that have fallen off and are stuck in your exhaust. kinked water inlet hose in your bell housing. Blown head gasket, cracked head or block. Look in your manual at the diagram of your cooling system and start checking things one at a time. sooner or later you will find the problem if you take it one step at a time.

Just a thought , did you compare the new impellar with the old one? Because if it is not the right one and not making contact with the walls at all times this could also be you problem since you said it wasn't the same right after you changed it.

Again just wandering if you did a side by side comparison with the old and new impellars to make sure that they were the same size? Good luck

Did you replace the impeller with the curls facing in the right direction? If not it will not work correctly, then will fail. I believe it is counterclockwise while looking down at the lower unit. Also was the outdrive pressure tested?

Re: Changed impeller don't know if its working.

I tested my pump impeller job by pulling the water feed hose off the t-stat housing, the water shot 3 feet so I knew it was pumping.

What type of drive ? Salt water or fresh ? Has it been sitting ?

The impeller were the same size. The directions say to spin it clockwise not counterclockwise. Unless they were wrong, I used the one from mercstuff.com. But it seems to me that the impeller is pushing the water out the prop instead of taking it up. So i might have went the wrong way with impeller casue i was having trouble getting the lower back on so i kept taking the water pump housing off. I cant remeber if the last time i went counterclockwise instead of clockwise.

there was water coming out the exhaust legs before i changed the impeller, It just needed to be changed it was pretty beat up. So i know that it was working before. I guess i am just going to have to take the lower off again.

do you have any water flow? maybe when assembling the lower and upper the water tube didn't get mated between the halves.. i've had troubles mating the two and i've always felt it was the water tube that gave me grief.. though i don't think i've ever totally missed because the water tube guide is there. but i suppose it could be possible to totally miss the connection. i'd go along with the other comment on pulling the hose at the ft. of the engine. see if any water is coming from it. that hose comes directly from the water pump, through a couple of connections, but still a direct shot..

Ya there is no water flow going through that hose. I was feeling it while the engine was running and there is no water going through it. I am just prob going to have to take the lower off again. Should water always be running through it or just once it get up to temp? Water should flow when it is just idleing correct?

anytime the engine is running, water flows from that hose as the water pump in the drive is always working...

Ok you said the impellar was "pretty beat up" was it missing pieces? if so you may have some of the old impellar lodged somewhere, Just a suggestion. Keep us posted and lots of luck!

Re: Changed impeller don't know if its working.

There wasnt any thing missing off the old impeller. The fins of impeller must be reversed. You r supposed to spin the shaft clockwise looking down at it when you are installing the housing over the impeller correct? If they were the wrong way would this casue no water to flow up? I am thinking that it wouldn't i think it would push it out and that seems to be whats happing. casue all the the water is just coming out the prop. Thanks for the help guys.

Are you sure you put the shaft key between the shaft and the impeller. If not, then the shaft will spin but the impeller won't.........
