Did you remember to ensure that the boat and the engine were in the same gear when you installed the LU?

Did you accidentally change the shift rod height?

Re: changed impellor wont go into gear

Marcel;

I have no clue what the other gentleman means by shift height. This is a Mercury engine and your shift arrangement is rotary, that is, when the gear selection is made, the shift shaft rotates a cam in the LU.

Your boat and the engine should both be in Fwd gear for installation of the LU and you must make sure that the reverse cam is also set correctly. Rather than a long explanation, I am including this link to the Clymer service manual. Let the page load for several seconds and then download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

As well, here is the parts listing for your engine if I haven't sent it before:

The reverse lock cam I am talking about is item 50 in this link:

Marcel'

Your engine will be the one per Fig. M11-43. Forward is for the earlier versions with the two piece metal reverse cam.

For yours, ensure that the LU is in Neutral and install the plastic cam as per M11-43.

Then with the boat and the LU still in Neutral you can fit the LU. If you find it difficult it may help if you have someone up front to just jiggle the shift lever a tiny bit either way to correct any misalignment of the shift shaft spines.

In my previous post, I said both in Forward. What I meant was that the LU must be in Neutral to install the cam in the correct position and after that, I shift the LU back to Forward, the boat to Forward and install the LU. I just find that easier when I don't have someone to help.

Making any sense?

Well she is back together and working, lot of labor mostly learning though. Turns out my motor did not have a cam on shift shaft, i guess because of the dual tilt cylinders but all is well with persistence. thanks for all the reply's hope to help someone out on a problem i have been through, happy boating! Re: changed impellor wont go into gear

Sry forgot to mention that I had to put both control and LU in neutral to get it to work tried forward but did not work. A special note to first timers attempting this a second pair of hands makes life easier. the hardest part was getting the shift shaft to spline in the front of LU. Good luck! Marcel

Well, that rather explains it, wish we had known of the tilt/trim setup. Glad you are back together and running.

Good Luck.
