I'm no mechanic; more of a bolt off/bolt on kinda guy. I was wondering how I was going to break the "thread lock" on the fan nut without buying an expensive specialty tool to hold the shaft. My Father-in-law told me to put an open end wrench on it, and a couple of quick sharp strikes with a small hammer will do it.

...Worked like a charm!!! Swapped out the water pumps in not too much more time than it takes a pro. New pump works perfectly.

Big thanks to my Father-in-Law!!!:D:D:D

Did you check the backlash on the toutonic bearing??? Well...... never mind.

Probably the absolute BEST way to re-pay your Father-in-law is to bless him with another grandchild!!! :D

QUICK pull of the trigger on a air hammer with pointed bit works well for removal and to tighten back up.

Of course!!! I may be just a dumb kid from Brooklyn, But I aren't stoopid!!!:p
I can't afford to replace another reconoiter valve...

That's another good idea, Thanks!!! When I told my Father-in-Law that I read online about using a centerpunch and a hammer to break the "threadlock" he made his suggestion. He has air tools. I'll tell him about your suggestion for future reference. Thanks again!!!

You just couldn't resist could you Bob, at least you didn't bring up the flux capacitor, but then he wasn't working on the taillights so I guess that wouldn't apply.

good thing he wasn't told to go and use a left handed crescent wrench instead of right handed!

Rebuilt the flux capacitor myself last week. I said I was a bolt off/bolt on kinda guy, but you know how expensive a new flux capacitor is these days...;)

When I told my Father-in-Law I couldn't find a left handed crescent wrench after searching for two weeks, he told me to just use an open end wrench...

So....how did you hold it when installing it? I hope you didn't use the same method.

Personally, I use the correct tool but maybe that's just me. Reminds me of the saying that when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail! :)

You can also tighten the belt or apply tension to it to stop it from turning and get the bolts loose.

yep, for the pulley. Stopping the pump from turning will not stop the fan from turning though.

The hammer wasn't big enough to install the pump. I used a baseball bat for that part of the job.;)

I'm generally a strong supporter of "The right tool for the right job". In this case, though, there was little to no room for damage or faulty work due to improvising to save time I don't have, and the purchase of an expensive specialty tool I'll most likely never use again...

$175 K unless you go with one of the flea-bay cheapies.

Ive used two wrenches at once on 2 of the 4 nuts that hold the fanclutch and repeat on the other 2.but the last one can be tricky if the bolts are too tight.

I recently changed the waterpump in my Dakota 3.9L -uses the same waterpump. His fan clutch isn't held onto the waterpump with four nuts like most. The shaft of the waterpump is threaded and the fan clutch screws onto it. A strap wrench around the pulley worked nicely to keep it from spinning. The waterpump looks like this:

The fan clutch looks like this (the bolts in the picture are for attaching the fan to the clutch):
