Changes and Merging of forums

This used to be the shutting down thread.

Two weeks ago we split up the engines and motors section into three unique sections under a new subsection of our boards called Marine Engines and Motors:
1. Non-Repair Engine Topics and Questions
2. Outboard Engine Troubles
3. Inboard and I/O Engine Troubles

This has helped (slightly) to take the load off of the one forum. So what do you all think of the change? Like it, dislike it? My personal opinion is that we merge the Non-Repair Engine Topics and Questions and Outboard Engine Troubles back together since people are having a hard time knowing where to post, and then just keep the two remaining forums calling them:
1. Outboard Engine Troubles & Questions
2. I/O or Inboard Engine Troubles & Questions
I also suggest that we move these two topics back to the General category and put them after Boat Questions. If in the future we all want to break up the Outboard Engine Troubles & Questions area into sub-areas, we could still do that.

Admin5,

Whew, you had me going there for a second.

I would suggest.

1. Put I/O before inboard in the wording.
2. Keep the engines seperate from boating.
3. If it is a space or capacity issue, how about closing "diving" and merge it into a new column called "watersports".

Good suggestions djohns19. I have edited my original post to reflect the wording change. Don't worry at all about server space or capacity. FYI if we want, we can have an additional 100+ new forums without a problem (other than that it would be a huge first page).

Re: Changes and Merging of forums

Me I like this board even if it doesn't give perfect distinction with the main board. I can follow this one daily and I'm more likely to be able to help -- I just don't have time to go through the main one daily and not a wrench (as if that's not obvious to those reading my posts) so I'm less likely to be able to help on the main one. The odds of a post on this board being one I can help on are far better.

I do think its a good idea to put all the boards under "general" -- I got lost at first like many others.

Hey wait a minute!!! You sure this post belongs under the title Outbaord Engine Troubles??? ;) Just kidding.

As what djohns said... I agree.

To tell the truth I don't think the wave of confusion has passed yet...(laughing...it may never) but some people are coming around.

As for the last penny running out I know I would pitch in a few to keep it going as well as some others.

Bob

Wait a minute, I actually thought I was in the non-repair board when I answered above :p . So does that just goes to prove the new arrangement is confusing no one?

I like the changes. ;)

They make sense and help by giving you a pre-sort on the information.

I have no problem as it is. But I think there is a good idea to have just the two sections you suggest:
1. Outboard Engine Troubles & Questions
2. I/O or Inboard Engine Troubles & Questions

If you/we decide to go for that, we don't have to change between the two outboard sections. I am an outboard freak and don't know much or anything about I/O or Inboard Engine Troubles & Questions.
Today I have to change between the two outboard sections and quite often people post in the wrong sections, or have 2-3 questions that should have been two different posts in two different sections. "What year and how do I get this engine running after seven years? Have no spark BTW." But as I said, I can live with that.

The two sections are logical and easy to understand where to post.

Bob_VT - :D

/Bear

Re: Changes and Merging of forums

I even prefer to have the outboards broken down into OMC (bombadier) and other brands. Doesn't show that I'm partial does it???

Admin,

I would like to see the breakdown as you have it, with an additional breakdown under outboards for difference manufacturers (not in order of preference, perhaps alphabetical):

Mercury:
Johnson/OMC:
Evinrude:
.
.
Etc.
ending with other:

My two cents.

Cheers.

emp.

Howdy, Admin5

I have been happy with the present arrangement, but I see no problem in reducing it to an Outboard Engines Forum and an I/O and Inboard Engines Forum.

I think the visual effect of the big blue bar redirects readers eyes to the Boating Forum. I hope that is why so many of the posts in the Boating Questions Forum have been outboard engine troubles.

Perhaps getting rid of the big blue bar will help posters to post in the correct forum. :)

I much prefer the engine section as one section. It is kind of a pain to search all the forums as a reader and contributor. The simpler the interface the more fun it is IMO.

Re: Changes and Merging of forums

I'm new to the site in the aspect of posting a topic but I have been visiting the site for about a year. Once I decided to post a topic, I had no problems finding my way around. To combine the two would be good. I had a time of trying to research my topic from both forums as it is now. No matter the outcome, the site is great.

Re: Changes and Merging of forums

Admin 5...personally, I would minimize the changes..more product specific boards, means more boards to check....tomorrow is another day, and another day to change...

I totally agree with Bear.

Although I currently am only familiar with Mercury/Mariner, I would prefer NOT to break into manufactures as I learn a bunch about the other motors this way.

Craig
