I have a 1992 Evinrude electric start 9.9 long shaft. I've recently purchased a boat that needs a short shaft and was wondering 1) can the long shaft be changed to a short shaft 2)can the 9.9 be "upgraded" to a 15hp at the same time 3)the cost that might be involved.

This motor has very limited hours of use on it(<10hrs)in case you're wondering why I don't just sell or trade it!

Thanks for any input!

This particular motor would NOT be a good canidate for upping HP or changing leg length.....too many parts needed and they are expensive....go price the drive shaft alone and you'll see what I mean...Might be better off offering it for sale to someone on a bigger boat that needs a kicker, grab the cash and buy a 15 HP short leg....

Hmmm, I got a quote today for ~$600 to do the shaft change and HP upgrade. Sounds like a good price considering what a new 15 goes for in my area. :)

Add that price to what you could sell your motor for and you could probably buy a NEW 15 HP mail order.....

I got an even better deal for you - Before you do anything and spend even one dime try it as is. I run a 1975 9.9 Johnny long shaft on a short shaft transom 13' alumnium runabout. It gets the wife & I up on a plane quite nicely & I have no handling problems. Yes it violates the short shaft on a short shaft transom rule but it works quite well for us.

I thought about that but, the motor will be used on a "sneakbox" boat for duck hunting in shallow marshes along the NJ coast. The short shaft will be needed. Thanks for the reply! :)

How about fabricating a bracket to raise the motor up on the transom? I have also seen those in some catalogs

Part of shooting out of a sneak involves staying low in the boat so the motor has to have a low profile. ;)
