I have a 89 Johnson 110hp outboard with a disfigured piston. The cyliner is not scourched or scuffed and I want to replace the piston and rings as simply as possible. I believe the rod is OK. I do not want to take the powerhead off the motor and break it all the way down to the crank if I dont have to.

Can the Piston and rings be replaced without removing the powerhead and breaking down the block? If so, can you give me some helpful hints on completing the replacement.

Thanks in advance for any responses,

Todd

Sorry Todd
You will have to disassemble the entire power head.

I know it is possible in a car motor, but ive been out looking at my 90hp evinrude, and the way the intake is (they are at an angle), it would prolly be extremely hard to get the rod caps off without screwing something up, or losing a part in the motor.

Re: Changing a piston without removing and breaking down the powrhead

I have the Clymer repair manual and it is not very detailed on the process to break down and build up the motor. I am not afraid of rebuilding the motor with a powerhead kit as long as I have good reference material to refer to. Can any of you recommend a better book to take me through the operation.

Would you recommend I just buy the powerblock kit and rebuild? Is it worth the money? Will the rest of the motor be reliable enough to warrent the investment, or is this starting to become a money pit? Are there any other parts that may break down after I install the Kit? I already rebuilt the water pump, which I understand is routine maintenance.

Kind regards and thanks for the replies.

Todd

I am sorry but the powerhead must be pulled. You can once the powerhead is pulled and split in half remove on piston . You would remove the two rod bolts then if your head is removed slide the piston and rod out through the bore. You can put your new piston and rings in . Hone that bore and put everything back but I am here to tell you that there is probably some damage in the bore if the piston looks funky. Good Luck

Replacing just one piston and rings is an acceptable procedure. I'd get the factory manual for the job though.

c/6
Hooty
