Re: Changing Bellows and Gimbal Bearing

I guess I got lucky as the tolerance ring in my drive was installed with the slots facing out, I bumped the gimbal bearing with a long 1/2" extension and a 3# hammer a few times and it rolled right around and fell out.

Putting it back together is easy, took me an hour or 2. I also bought the hinge pin tool as I figured I wanted full spline drive contact on some 30+ year old tight bolts.
Might as well replace the trim limit/sender while your there.

With the rod threaded back a bit you pull the sliding part to the rear and insert the fixed part(pic1), thru the bearing far enough allowing the sliding part(pic2) to go thru, draw it back to lock it in place, thread nut down (covered by my hand)to apply pressure and out it comes.
Why the 3/8ths rod? Designed to break or strip the nut before any damage can be done to the housing, hasen`t happpened yet .

betayv,
Scroll up in this thread to post # 7. That guy Jim Hall really is a great guy, good prices on the products, and fast shipping. As for the alignment tool, I got it off ebay, I believe the user name was "gailandbrett". I know they are in South Carolina, but I ended up paying about $40 after shipping.

I bought an alignment tool from gailandbrett also and would avoid at all cost. It took over two weeks to receive the tool and the guy is a total arse. A real rude guy and not helpful at all. If all goes smoothly, you won't have any problems. But let something happen with your order and try to deal with this guy...wouldn't recommend it. Just my two cents.

I'm sorry to hear about your encounter with them. Luckily mine was smoother. I forgot to read their feedback before I paid for it, but afterwards I was worried. Anyways, the alignment tool arrived in exactly 7 days.
