I have been using the standard "caramel color" gear lube in my outdrive. I want to switch to the blue-green hi performance lube. Do I need to "rinse" the drive when making the switch? Can I use kerosene or something similar to rinse instead of the $13 a quart hi-perf oil?

No reason to rinse it. Leave the drain out and let it drain over night, put plug in, fill with oil, go boating. :D

Ayuh,... Agreed,...
They're All very compatible,+ with an overnight drainin', there's nothing there to mix anyways...

Thanks for the info. I wish I could "go boating" but I live in Pa and boating season is still 3 - 4 months away.

Plenty of draining time left ......;)
Agree with not rinsing...just fill her back up.
Remember to use new drain and vent plug gaskets...

Re: Changing from regular to hi-perf gear oil

My mechanic recommended that I switch to the Merc Hi Performance gear oil from the OMC hi vis I was using and since switching back in 2004 I've had no issues...the oil usually comes out just a bit darker than it went in but the unit shifts very well and is quiet.....
