Changing Gear Lube

I just bought a 1968 9.5hp Johnson and I want to change the gear lube. I don't have the owners manual yet. There's the drain screw at the bottom of the lower unit and than there's the one above it.

When the lube comes up to the upper screw does that mean it's full?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Changing Gear Lube

Yes, when you fill from the bottom, drain, screw it will fill until gear lube comes out the upper, vent screw, then yes it is full of gear oil. Remember to put the vent top screw on first and then remove your tube or container of gear lube from the bottom drain screw and then install your drain bottom screw until it is snugged down. Reason you do it this way is becuase you create a vacuum that keeps the gear lube form draining out super fast as your putting the bottom screw back in to tighten it down. Also remember to put brand new o-rings or gaskets on both your drain/vent screws so your lower unit doesn't get water inside of it. Take care, Bob

Yes, DO NOT take out the phillips head screw. Just take out the straight/flat head screws out. Have fun, Bob
